Montgomery Aztecs sweep to Metro-South Bay League boys volleyball title Phillip Brents | Fri, May 09 2014 12:20 PM

The Montgomery Aztecs boys volleyball team placed an exclamation point beside its name as the top team in the Metro-South Bay League after sweeping all six of its league matches this spring by 3-0 scores. The Aztecs topped visiting Mar Vista 25-16, 25-10, 25-10 on Tuesday and closed out league play on Thursday by sweeping visiting San Ysidro 25-13, 25-15, 25-15.

The Aztecs improved to 17-10 overall and look to be in the thick of the upcoming San Diego Section Division I playoffs. Montgomery finished regular season play with the fourth-best record in the division, trailing Scripps Ranch (26-8), San Marcos (21-10) and San Pasqual (11-6). Following the Aztecs in the division standings are Canyon Crest Academy (21-13), Mt. Carmel (17-11-1), Steele Canyon (21-14), Del Norte (17-13) and La Jolla (17-14), St. Augustine (13-11), Ramona (19-18), Mission Hills (14-14) , Grossmont (16-16) and Rancho Benrardo (12-15).

Montgomery could not get past visiting Otay Ranch in a high profile non-league game on Wednesday as the visiting Mustangs prevailed by scores of 25-15, 25-22, 25-18. Otay Ranch, which will compete in the upcoming San Diego Section Open Division playoffs, improved to 23-12 overall. The Mustangs have one Metro-Mesa League loss to Eastlake.

Entering Wednesday's match, Terrill Williams led Montgomery with 161 kills on the season while teammate Jimmy Guan had accumulated 207 assists.

Metro-Pacific League champions

Hilltop closed out a perfect league slate to win the inaugural Metro-Pacific title by sweeping host Chula Vista 25-18, 25-16, 25-12 on Thursday after topping visiting Sweetwater by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 24-26, 25-22 on Tuesday.

Season leaders for the Lancers include Frank Valadez with 215 kills, Josue Macias with 153 kills, Luis Hernandez with 105 kills, Nohea Rose with 64 aces, Valadez with 26 aces, Rose with 54 blocks, Valadez with 184 digs, Macias with 171 digs and Rose with 150 digs and 555 assists.

The Lancers finished with the top win-loss record (28-5) among San Diego Section teams this spring, followed by Bishop's (16-4), Granite Hills (21-7), Escondido (24-10) and Francis Parker (18-12).

Metro-Mesa League co-champions

Otay Ranch closed out Metro-Mesa play on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Bonita Vista. The Mustangs, who finished 5-1 in league play, won by scores of 25-13, 25-13, 25-20.

CJ Lazo was selected as the player of the match by the winning team.

Otay Ranch coach Tony Fajardo noted that "C.J. has been coming on strong and was the top senior on Senior Night."

Lazo led the teaming scoring with 14.5 points. He had a team high 13 kills with what Fajardo termed "an efficient" .476 hitting percentage. He also played well on defense with 1.5 blocks and nine digs.

Fajardo called the win over the Barons (1-5 in league, 17-10 overall) "a complete match and a strong finish to the regular season."
The Mustangs now take a 24-12 record into post-season play. Otay Ranch finished with the fourth-best record among the eight Open Division teams, trailing Torrey Pines (19-4), La Costa Canyon (23-6) and Westview (22-9).

Season leaders include Andres Verjan with 152 kills, Justin Doton with 145 kills, Noel Kim with 125 kills, Hector Cebreros with 27 aces, Efrain Sharkey with 51 blocks,
Josh Kritsanajootha with 253 digs, Noah Alegrado with 219 digs, Kim with 164 digs, Cebreros with 157 digs, Doton with 132 digs, Cebreros with 441 assists and Derek Gascon with 308 assists.

Cebreros had 25 assists in Thursday's win against Bonita Vista while Doton tacked on nine kills and teammate Kevin Tumalad recorded eight kills.

Eastlake defeated host Olympian on Thursday by scores of 23-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-20 to also finish 5-1 in Metro-Mesa play as league co-champions with Otay Ranch. The Titans, who also are entered in the Open Division, improved to 15-15 overall on the season. 

The two east side rivals each handed the other its only league loss this season. The Mustangs topped visiting Eastlake by score of 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 on April 18 while the Titans out-lasted visiting Otay Ranch, 3-1, by scores of 19-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-22 on May 1.

The Titans finished regular season play with the seventh-best record among Open Division teams, positioned only above Poway (4-18). Cathedral Catholic finished fifth in the division in the regular season standings with an 18-11 record, followed by Carlsbad (16-10).

As far as head-to-head match-ups this season, Otay Ranch has beaten Grossmont, Poway, Valhalla, La Jolla, Rancho Beranrdo and Cathedral Catholic, has traded wins with Steele Canyon, and lost to Westview and Scripps Ranch (twice) while Eastlake has beaten Grossmont, Valhalla, St. Augustine and Scripps Ranch, traded wins with Francis Parker and lost to Cathedral Catholic, Rancho Bernardo, Coronado, Torrey Pines, Bishop's, Westview (twice) and Canyon Crest Academy (three times).

The Open Division quarterfinals are May 17, followed by the semifinals on May 21 and the championship game May 24 at Cathedral Catholic High School (5 p.m.).

First-round play in Division III and Division IV starts May 13 and May 14 in Division I and Division II. Quarterfinals are scheduled May 16 for Division III and Division IV and May 17 for Division I and Division II, followed by semifinals on May 20 for Division III and Division IV and May 21 for Division I and Division II.

Championship games in Division III (7 p.m.) and Division IV (5 p.m.) are May 23 at Canyon Crest High School while championship games in Division I (3 p.m.) and Division II (1 p.m.) are May 24 at Cathedral Catholic High School.
