Metro Conference runners show well at Mt. Carmel Sundevil Invitational Phillip Brents | Wed, Sep 19 2012 03:57 PM

The high school cross country season continued with last Saturday’s Mt. Carmel Sundevil/Movin’ Shoes Invitational at Balboa Park’s Morely Field. South County harriers posted a number of standout performances.

Highlights:
   
•Sweetwater’s George Martinez placed fifth among the 239 runners who competed in the Division I senior boys division race, timing 15:38 for 2.95 miles.

•Otay Ranch’s Carina Gillespie placed fifth among the 177 runners who competed in the Division I senior girls division race, timing 16:17 for 2.75 miles.

•Otay Ranch’s Catie LeDesma was seventh in the Division I senior girls race in 16:32 as the Mustangs finished fifth in the team standings.

•Otay Ranch’s Darla Osuna was seventh in the Division I sophomore girls race in 14:18 in a race shortened to 2.45 miles because of high heat conditions. The Mustangs placed 12th in the team standings.

•Bonita Vista’s Marlene Aranda was seventh in the Division I freshmen girls race in 14:48 in a race shortened to 2.45 miles because of high heat conditions while teammate Justine Holden was 12th in the same race in 14:58 to lead the Barons to a second place team finish — just five points behind team champion Aliso Niguel.

•Castle Park finished third in the Division II senior boys division team standings, led by Jesus Ortiz (eighth, 10:47) and Daniel Vasquez (ninth, 10:48) in a race shortened to 2.08 miles because of high heat conditions. The Trojans finished just six points behind second place Canyon Crest Academy.

•Castle Park finished fifth in the Division II junior boys division teams standings, paced by Jesse Villarruel (21st, 11:29 for 2.08 miles in a race shortened by high heat conditions).

•Hilltop was eighth in the Division II sophomore girls division team standings, paced by Mary Reilly (45th, 15:16) and Emily Reilly (52nd, 15:25) in a race shortened to 2.08 miles because of high heat conditions.

•Olympian was ninth in the Division II sophomore girls division team standings, led by Cassidy Adams (78th, 16:03) in the field of 141 finishers.

•Eastlake was ninth in the Division I freshmen boys team standings, paced by Andres Correa (31st, 16:19 for 2.7 miles)

•Bonita Vista was 11th in the Division I freshman boys team standings, led by Simon Mazzahi (69th, 17:21).

•Otay Ranch finished 11th in the Division I junior boys division team standings, led by Steven Liu (30th, 17:11) and Alexis Hernandez (42nd, 17:26).

•Bonita Vista placed 12th in the Division I senior boys division, paced by Jacob Sherman (22nd 16:23).

•Otay Ranch finished 13th in the Division I senior boys division, led by Rodrigo Baza (56th, 17:04).

•Olympian’s Brissa Cabrero placed 11th among individuals in the Division II junior girls race, timing 13:44 in a race shortened to 2.08 miles due to high heat conditions.

•Bonita Vista’s Jennifer Yang finished 18th among individuals in the Division I senior girls race, timing 17:10. Following her lead were teammates Kristen Lamprecht (23rd, 17:22) and Clarissa Hernandez (24th, 17:32).

•Olympian’s Isaiah Duenas was 16th among Division II freshmen boys, timing 12:13 for 2.08 miles in a race shortened because of high heat conditions. The Eagles were third in the team standings.

•Mater Dei Catholic finished sixth in the Division II freshmen boys team standings, led by Salvador Rodriguez (22nd, 12:27).

Bronco Roundup
Castle Park participated in the 2012 Bronco Roundup Sept. 8 at Kit Carson Park in Escondido.

Seniors Daniel Vazquez and Jesus Ortiz placed eighth and 27th, respectively, in the 87-deep Division I boys race. Vazquez timed 10:06 and Ortiz timed 10:28 in the two-mile distance.

Senior Keeshawna Jackson (13:39) was 17th in the two-mile Division II girls varsity race. Ninety-one runners completed the race.

South Bay Invitational
The 39th edition of the region’s longest-running event will take place Friday, Sept. 21, at Rohr Park.

Race schedule: junior varsity girls, 3:30 p.m.; frosh/soph boys, 4:10 p.m.; varsity girls, 4:40 p.m., varsity boys, 5:10 p.m.; junior varsity boys, 5:40 p.m.

Team trophies will be awards to the first- through third-place teams in the both the varsity races frosh/soph and first- and second-place teams in the JV races.

The first 35 finishers will receive a medal in all the races.
