Mesa League standouts selected to play in county all-star boys water polo game Phillip Brents | Fri, Dec 14 2012 12:40 PM

Three players from Chula Vista schools will be participating in Saturday’s seventh annual Senior Water Polo Classic All-Star Game at Coronado High School. They include Josue Alvarez and Daniel Lord from Eastlake, and Nicholas Howard from Hilltop.

Game time is 4 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students.

The game will feature some of the best high school senior water polo players in San Diego County, many who of whom will play for premier collegiate programs around the country next year.

Seniors were nominated from high schools throughout the county. The teams are selected through a coach’s poll at the conclusion of the CIF season; players are divided into small and large campus teams.

Howard set school and conference records with 199 regular season goals, which places him No. 3 all-time in the San Diego Section record book. He tacked on six goals and nine steals in a first-round playoff game against West Hills to finish his senior season with 205 total goals and a section-record 210 steals.

He was recently named the Mesa League Player of the Year and was also named to the All-Division II first team.

Macias and Lord are both first team all-league selections for Mesa League champion Eastlake. Macias led the Titans in regular season team scoring with 110 goals, 59 assists and 99 steals while Lord ranked second with 82 goals, 40 assists and 86 steals.

“I’m very excited and proud that we got representation from the Mesa League,” Hilltop coach John Salts said. “All three gentlemen are well-deserving selections and I’m sure they will do well in the game.”

EHS coach Chris Barrick called all three Mesa standouts “very fundamentally solid water polo players.”

“For the first time in a long time, all three of these guys are as good on the defensive side of the ball as the offensive side,” Barrick said. “Between Nick, Josue and Daniel, there are well over 300 goals and close to just as many defensive steals between them. It should be fun to watch.”

Proceeds from Saturday’s game will be used to provide scholarships so that low-income youth can become lifeguards and swim instructors, a process that can be cost prohibitive for some teenagers.

The game also raises funds for the Memorial Day Blowout, an intensive swim instructor training where more than 50 scholarship recipients are trained to teach lessons for a fraction of the typical cost. It can cost as much as $400 to obtain the necessary certifications to be considered for a pool lifeguard position.

“Our organization is one of the premier drowning prevention groups in the country, and we do it with passionate volunteers from agencies all over the county,” said Manuel Gonzalez, president of the San Diego County Aquatic Council. “We are celebrating the accomplishments of these students while showcasing one of the most exciting sports, but we are also taking strides to reduce drowning.”

In the past year, San Diego County has seen a dramatic decrease in the number of fatal accidental drowning incidents among children from previous years.

Free April Pools Day events are planned throughout San Diego County for every Saturday this coming April.
