Mesa League report: Eastlake Titans take 3-0 lead in boys basketball standings Phillip Brents | Thu, Jan 26 2012 01:00 AM

The Eastlake High School boys basketball team remained undefeated in Mesa League play by defeating visiting Hilltop, 41-39, on Wednesday. The Titans improved to 3-0 in league play while dropping the Lancers to 1-2.

Aaron Baltazar keyed Eastlake (10-9 overall) with 16 points while Josiah Chavez paced Hilltop (2-15 overall) with 13 points. Also for the Lancers, Jason Welchance scored 11 points.

Otay Ranch remained a game behind the Titans in the league standings after topping Bonita Vista, 68-41, behind 14 points from Andre Jones and 11 points each from Andrew Jones and Jorge Reyes. The Mustangs improved to 2-1 in league play, 10-9 overall.

Dejuan Owens keyed the Barons (1-2 in league, 2-17 overall) with 14 points.

Olympian (2-1 in league, 13-6 overall) kept Mater Dei Catholic (0-3, 7-12) winless in league play following a 54-46 victory, also on Wednesday. 

Michael White scored 18 points and Billy Moses added 16 points in Olympian’s 76-31 victory against Bonita Vista last Friday (Jan. 20). The Eagles grabbed 37 rebounds, including 24 defensive boards, in the win.

In other games on Jan. 20, Eastlake topped Otay Ranch, 58-46, to pick up its second league victory in as many Mesa starts. Baltazar and Tabula led the Titans with 16 points each while Katz scored 12 points. Baltazar also led EHS with seven rebounds.

The Mustangs entered the final quarter trailing 41-38. But a 17-8 rush extended the Titan lead. Eastlake led, 17-8, after the opening quarter but trailed, 28-24, at halftime after being overwhelmed by a 20-7 scoring run by Otay Ranch in the second quarter.

The Titans won the third quarter scoring battle, 17-10, to go back on top.

Girls Basketball
Mater Dei Catholic remained undefeated (2-0) in Mesa League play following its 74-28 victory at Hilltop on Jan. 20. Three players scored in double figures for the thired-ranked Crusaders (11-5 overall): Kandiss Barber (15 points), Kiden Gowolo (12 points) and Cardedra Evans (12 points). Alexandria Young led MDC with 13 rebounds while Barber collected four steals and three assists.

Mesa League newcomer Olympian moved to a promising 2-0 start in league play by defeating visiting Bonita Vista, 45-39, on Jan. 20. Kristina Brown (17 points) and Nirelle Davis (14 points) led the Eagles (9-8 overall) in scoring.

Bonita Vista dropped to 1-1 in league play, 12-7 overall.

Boys soccer

Defending Mesa League champion Hilltop improved to 2-0 in league play in 2012 after crushing visiting Olympian, 5-1, on Jan. 20. The Lancers scored all six goals in the game, including an own goal for the visitors.

Abdiel Flores paced Hilltop (12-2-1 overall) with two goals while Omar Hernandez and Oscar Ortega each contributed a goal and assist and Rigoberto Maciel scored once. Jimmy Estrada was credited with two assists in the game.

Eastlake (1-1 in league play, 2-8-3 overall) rebounded from its league opening 3-0 loss to visiting Hilltop on Jan. 18 by edging visiting Otay Ranch, 3-2, in another Mesa League match played on Jan. 20. Marcus Adachi netted two goals in the game for the Titans, who also received one goal from Manuel Sotomayor.

Otay Ranch dropped to 0-1-1 in league play, 9-2-1 overall.

Girls soccer
Bonita Vista continued its strong start to the 2011-12 season by pushing its overall record to 13-2-2 following a 4-0 Mesa League victory at Mater Dei Catholic on Jan. 20. The Barons received goals from four players: Kassie Castillo, Kianna Brevig, Pascale Dumesnil and Taylor Gilstrap. BV goalkeeper Courtney Langseth was credited with one save in recording the shutout victory.

Mater Dei fell to 0-2 in league play, 0-5-1 on the season.

The Eastlake Titans kept pace with Bonita Vista atop the Mesa standings by shutting out host Otay Ranch, 2-0, on Jan. 20. Brenna Bailey and Gabriela Sainz each scored goals to lead Eastlake (7-3-1 overall). Jojo McCaskill had two saves in registering the shutout win.

Otay Ranch dropped to 0-2 in league play, 6-7-1 overall.


South Bay League notepad
Following their climactic encounter last Friday, both the San Ysidro and Sweetwater boys basketball teams resumed course for a possible second high impact collision after picking up victories on Wednesday.

San Ysidro defeated Chula Vista, 77-68, behind 19 points each from Ronald Stewart and Fernando Ahumada and 15 points from Chandler Tarrant to remain in sole possession of first place. Chula Vista's Thomas Nollie led all scorers in the game with 30 points.

Sweetwater defeated visiting Southwest, 99-56, to keep hold on second place in the standings. Junior Bautista led the Red Devils with 25 points, followed by teammate Spencer Mattox with 23 points.

The Sweetwater girls basketball team remained in first place by defeating Southwest, 53-12, on Wednesday. Chula Vista remained in second place by defeating San Ysidro 53-30.

The Red Devils shaded the Spartans by five points in their first-round league match-up.

Sweetwater's boys soccer teams battled to a 1-1 standoff against visiting San Ysidro to earn one point in the league standings. Meanwhile, Southwest blasted Mar Vista by a 10-0 score to make a statement in league play.
