Mater Dei Catholic, Sweetwater pace Metro boys hoops teams in top 10 section rankings Phillip Brents | Fri, Jan 17 2014 01:45 PM

Could the Mater Dei Catholic and Sweetwater boys basketball teams be in line to win San Diego Section divisional championships this season?

At the midpoint of the 2013-14 campaign, both the Crusaders and Red Devils certainly have gained the respect of media members who compile the weekly rankings.

Sitting at No. 2 behind St. Augustine are the Crusaders with their 12-2 record through 14 games. Sweetwater occupies the No. 5 slot in the weekly top 10 section poll.

Both teams appear to deserve their current ranking.

Mater Dei Catholic captured the American Division title at the recent Under Armour Holiday Classic  while the Devils remained undefeated at 12-0 after defeating visiting Poway, 91-56, last Saturday.

Major movers and shakers for the two teams so far have been senior guards Iman Chatman for the Crusaders and Spencer Mattox for Sweetwater.

Chatman earned division MVP honors at the Under Armour Classic while Mattox scored a season high 38 points in SuHi’s South County-North County statement win against previously 10th-ranked Poway.
