Mater Dei Catholic cruises to 15th consecutive girls hoops win Phillip Brents | Tue, Feb 26 2013 02:51 PM

The wins have quietly piled up for the Mater Dei Catholic High School girls basketball team. The Crusaders, seeded second in this year’s San Diego Section Division IV playoffs, bounced seventh-seeded Coronado, 66-23, in last Friday’s quarterfinals to pick up their 15th consecutive victory.

Is there any team currently hotter in the section than Mater Dei Catholic? The third-seeded Bishop’s Knights will have something to say about that as the teams tip off in semifinal action Tuesday at MDCHS at 7 p.m.

The Crusaders, ranked fifth in the section, enter the highly anticipated match-up sporting a 20-5 record; the Knights are 18-11 and are coming off last Friday’s 93-14 quarterfinal win against Christian.

Mater Dei Catholic made no mistake as to which was the better team on the court by bounding to a commanding 30-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The host Crusaders whipped up the scoring frenzy with 24 points in the third quarter.

Kandiss Barber paced the hosts with 25 points while teammates Britanni Lusain and Alexandria Young each contributed nine points. Lusain collected eight steals while Billie Driver hauled in seven rebounds.

Eight different Crusaders scored points in the game.

Barber is averaging 16.4 points per game while Young is averaging 14.4 points per game.

Bishop’s held Christian (11-10) to single digits in each quarter, allowing just one point in the final quarter. Meanwhile, Imani Littleton lit up the scoreboard for the Knights with 36 points while also grabbing a team-high 15 rebounds and 12 steals.

Devon Roeper added 19 points for Bishop’s, which also received 18 points from Olivia Erlbeck. Roeper also had 11 rebounds and seven steals.

Littleton is averaging 21.7 points per game.

Second-seeded Ocean View Christian Academy (19-6) moved one round closer to returning to the Division V championship game after defeating visiting San Pasqual Academy, 48-36, last Friday. The Patriots jumped out to leads of 12-3 in the first quarter and 23-9 at halftime that proved to be the difference.

Sabrina Johnson keyed Ocean View with a game-high 30 points and 25 rebounds. She also contributed six blocks and three assists. Mailia Naputi contributed eight points and two steals while Kathia Perez added six points.

San Pasqual Academy had advanced to meet the Patriots with a 57-38 opening round victory played the night before. The game had been postponed from Feb. 19 due to adverse weather conditions in the East County back country.

Ocean View now faces third-seeded Tri-City Christian (21-5) in Tuesday’s semifinals. TCC defeated Calvin Christian, 67-45, in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Alyssa Ramos led the victors with 34 points and seven steals while teammate Tori Badger grabbed 13 rebounds and contributed four assists.

Ramos is averaging 25.8 points per game.

Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Ocean View Christian Academy.
