Mar Vista Mariners run past Francis Parker, 37-0, advance record to 2-0 Phillip Brents | Fri, Sep 23 2011 01:23 AM

Mar Vista coach Brian Hay jokingly referred to the forward pass as an "outdated form" of offensive football in a recent television interview. The running game certainly works for the Mariners, who why mess with success?

Mar Vista attempted just one pass in last Friday’s non-league game against San Diego Section Division V power Francis Parker. The host Mariners rushed 40 times for 430 yards and won 37-0.

Jimmie Hill (10 carries, 127 yards), Adrian Iriarte (three carries, 91 yards), Keevin Moore (11 carries, 90 yards), Jordan Lertique (five rushes, 45 yards) and Kenny Nieves (three carries, 32 yards) each scored touchdown runs.

Bennie Smith also added 45 rushing yards on eight carries.

Lashon Riggens led the MV defensive effort with two sacks while Moore and Cash Thompson each had one sack. Junior Rodriguez led the Mariners with seven tackles overall. Moore and Riggens also each had six stops.

Ricardo Moriel had one punt return for 45 yards.

Francis Parker’s Gabe Harrington completed 10 of 20 passes for 63 yards while Jesse Brookins, also from the South Bay, rushed 16 times for 91 yards. Hank Childs was kept busy on the field with 13 tackles.

The loss was the first of the season for the Lancers (2-1).

Mar Vista (2-0) next plays at Monte Vista (1-2) on Friday. The Monarchs are coming off a 50-14 loss to defending San Diego Section Division V and State Bowl champion Bishop’s.
