Luna scores lucky '7' for Trojans in OT roller hockey win Phillip Brents | Thu, Dec 13 2012 05:07 PM

In the 13-year history of the CIF-Metro Conference there have been few games like the one pitting the Castle Park Trojans and the Chula Vista Spartans that took place Wednesday afternoon at Castle Park High School.

One player for each team scored all their team’s goals in a game that ended with a 7-6 South Bay League overtime victory for the Trojans.

Juan Luna scored all seven Castle Park goals, including the game-winner in overtime; Morgan Spangler scored all six Chula Vista goals.

The game was one fraught with huge momentum swings.

Spangler scored the opening three goals of the game to give Chula Vista a 3-0 lead. But that quickly evaporated as Luna responded with three straight goals of his own to give both players natural hat tricks in the first period and lock the teams into a 3-all tie.

But Luna wasn’t finished. He scored three more goals in the second period to give him six straight for the game and a double hat trick – one in each period.

Turnabout proved to be fair play as Spangler then went on a scoring spree by notching the game’s next three goals to give him a double hat trick for the game – one in the first period and one in the second period.

The teams finished regulation tied 6-6.

But what Spangler started, Luna finished by scoring his seventh goal of the game with 2:15 left in the five-minute sudden-victory OT period.

Luna wove through three CV defenders and lifted a shot from the right of Spartan goaltender Lindsay Bull to score the winner, with the puck bulging to the far netting.

It was the second overtime loss this season for Bull and the Spartans.

“Hard work pays off,” Luna said. “I was tried but I knew I had to suck it up for the team.”

The victory upped their league record to 2-1 and evened their overall record at 2-2; Chula Vista dropped to 0-3 in league play, 0-4 overall.

In Wednesday’s SBL nightcap, Sweetwater defeated Mar Vista, 6-1, in a fast-paced game that featured constant back-and-forth action and good play by both goaltenders.

Mauricio Estrada paced Sweetwater (2-1 in league play, 2-2 overall) with five goals while Red Devil teammate Adrian Guerrero collected three assists.

Sweetwater built a 4-0 lead when Andrew Medlock scored for Mar Vista, assisted by Jacob David.

The second period was evenly played by both teams, though the period ended scoreless. But it wasn’t for a lack of action.

The Devils closed out the game with two third period goals.

The Mariners fell to 1-2 in league play, 1-2 overall.

In Tuesday’s Mesa League double-header, both the Eastlake Titans and Otay Ranch Mustangs maintained their lead atop the standings with solid victories. Otay Ranch defeated the defending league champion Hilltop Lancers, 8-4, while Eastlake rolled over the Bonita Vista Barons by a score of 18-3.

Both the Mustangs and Titans are 2-0 in league play; both the Lancers and Barons are 0-2 in league play.

Eastlake and Otay Ranch are scheduled to meet for the first time in league play on Jan. 3 at 4:30 p.m. at Skate San Diego.

The Mustangs wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead on the Lancers as Matt Mendez scored 32 seconds into the game, assisted by Carlos Barrios.

George Godinez, assisted by Nick Tesner, evened the score at 1-1 with just under three minutes elapsed in the contest. But Otay Ranch rolled in the next four goals — one each by Barrios, Devyn Taras, Gabe Beatie and Mendez — to take a commanding 5-1 lead after the opening period.

Mendez completed his hat trick with the lone goal of the second period for a 6-1 Mustang lead.

Taras scored the final two goals for Otay Ranch to also give him a hat trick in the game.

Hilltop narrowed the score at one point in the third period to 7-4. Godinez posted a hat trick of his own for the Lancers.

Taras led all scorers in the game with three goals and two assists while Beatie racked up a goal and three assists.

Otay Ranch improved to 4-0 overall with the victory.

Eastlake built leads of 6-1 and 15-2 against Bonita Vista. Michael Mechling led the Titans with seven goals and three assists while teammate Aaron Mayer collected nine points on four goals and five assists. Zach Landry added three goals and two assists while Sam Bawden and Jacky Ponce each contributed a goal and two assists. Zane White chalked up a pair of assists.

Jon O’Brien was credited with all three goals for Bonita Vista and Giancarlo Dongo with two assists.

Bonita Vista and Hilltop meet for the first time in league play on Jan. 3 at 3:30 p.m. at Skate San Diego.

Mayer leads the CIF-Metro Conference’s nine South County teams in scoring with 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points. He stands one point behind conference scoring leader Spencer Ridout of Rancho Bernardo (15 goals, 11 assists).
