Lancers sweep swim meet against Royal Knights

A swim meet usually conjures up images of water, but water in a pool, not falling from the sky.

The Hilltop and Calvary Christian Academy high school swim teams got together last Friday for a non-league swim meet at the Parkway pool. The diving competition got under way under generally clear skies but midway through the four-person six-dive competition, the skies turned gray and the wind began to pick up.

Three events into the swim meet, light rain began to fall. A few minutes later, heavier rain began to fall.

“My meet sheet got soaking wet and some of the names and times were hard to read,” Hilltop coach Ernie Medina apologized after the meet.

The meet was the first in school history for Calvary Christian Academy, a small private school in the Otay Ranch enclave. The Royal Knights fielded five swimmers for their inaugural dip in the pool — four boys and one girl.

Hilltop won the boys meet 107-20 and captured the girls meet 105-4.

But the emphasis for both teams was on competing, not necessarily on scoring.

The Lancers won 10 events in both ends of the meet.

Hilltop winners in the boys meet included Emilio Maldonado (200 freestyle and 100 freestyle), Andy Uribe (200 individual medley and 100 butterfly), Sidney Aki (50 freestyle), Josh Fischer (diving), Ivan Corona (500 freestyle) and all relays.

Hilltop winners in the girls meet included Jordan Carpadakis (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle), Ysatiz Silva (200 IM), Sabrina Chavez (50 freestyle), Mia Ballesteros (diving), Cassandra Monroy Hidalgo (100 butterfly) and all relays.

Divers included Fischer, Ballesteros, Daniel Ryan and Julian Soto.
