Lancers sink Cougars, 18-2, to speed to 4-1 season start Phillip Brents | Mon, Sep 23 2013 03:44 PM

The Hilltop High School water polo team defeated San Ysidro, 18-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Parkway pool to run its early season record to 4-1. The Lancers will compete in a pair of out-of-town tournaments before they face off Mesa League play on Oct. 9 against defending league champion Eastlake at Southwestern College.

Who is favored to capture this year’s league title? That’s a very good question as the 2013 season gets going.

HHS coach John Salts would like his team to play each game as if it counted for the league championship; certainly the Lancers came out firing in Tuesday’s non-league match-up against the Cougars.

The Lancers quickly built an 8-0 lead that eventually ballooned to 13-0 at halftime.

“This team starts out like our practices — everything is precise — but it’s just a little slower than last year,” Salts noted. “What I really like about this team is its leadership.

“Our goalie, Josue Macias, is the glue that is holding us together right now. Carlos Lizarraga is doing a great job of leadership with the Martinez twins (Mauricio and Marco). Those four guys are our team leaders. They’re bringing up the younger guys.

“This is a young team. The sooner it can jell, the longer it can play together as a unit, not only this year but for the future.”

Hilltop faced off regular season play with lopsided non-league wins against Olympian (21-2) and Southwest (15-3) before dropping a 16-4 non-league decision against Helix. The Lancers rebounded with a 20-3 non-league victory last Friday at El Cajon Valley.

Lizarraga scored six goals in last Friday’s game; he and teammate Mauricio Martinez each scored four goals on Tuesday.

Seven Hilltop players in all scored at least one goal. Andy Becerra tallied three times against the Cougars while Marco Martinez, Emilio Maldonado and Elias Munoz each had two goals and Noah Collins scored once.

Macias did not allow a goal in two quarters of work, making seven saves while also dishing out an assist.

Six-foot-six Ben Goodwin made five saves while allowing two goals in his two quarters of work for the Lancers.

Hilltop led 14-0 before San Ysidro could dent the net on fourth quarter goals by Daniel Mar and Isaac Nuza.

Otay Ranch defeated Olympian, 14-5, in a non-league game on Wednesday to improve to 3-0. Fabian Orozco led the Mustangs with four goals and one assist while teammate Angel Aguilar scored four goals while collecting one steal. Eddie Rosenfeld had three goals and one steal; Nick Sedan had one goal and two steals. Ozkar Alvarez scored once and had one assist while Jake Hamner had two steals and one assist. Rob Lechner made eight goalie saves.
