It's bombs away for Chula Vista North Pony all-stars Phillip Brents | Fri, Jul 29 2011 04:04 PM

Could we be ready for a magical three-peat? It’s still a long way off until the Pony-14 World Series in mid-August in Washington, Pa. But by the way the Chula Vista North All-Stars were blasting opponents in mid-July en route to claiming this year’s Southwest Region South Section championship title, the local group of hard-ballers appeared as if they had what it takes to punch their ticket to youth baseball’s promised land.

And why not? Ten of the 14 players on this year’s CVN-Maroon squad were members of last year’s Pony-13 World Series championship team.

Success seems to be ongoing for this talented group and, specifically, for two of the 2009 fabled Park View Little League World Series champions who have made the transition to Pony baseball.

CVN-Maroon manager Joel Corona admitted he was very fortunate to be handed this group to coach this summer.

“It’s a team that works well together,” Corona said. “They pretty much shut people down.”

CVN-Maroon swept through the section finals with a 4-0 mark. Included in the team’s win streak was a 7-0 forfeit victory over Sunshine, a 10-0 run-rule win over CNN-Grey, a 12-1 run-rule decision over Chula Vista South and an 11-5 victory over CVS in the championship game on July 6.

In the three games contested on the field, CVN-Maroon out-scored opponents 33-6, averaging 11 runs in each victory.

The top three teams from the section tournament advanced to the eight-team double-elimination regional finals ongoing through Monday in Lakeside. The top three finishers from that tournament advance to the Super Region tourney July 28 to Aug. 2 in Whittier/Camarillo.

The West Zone finals are Aug. 4-9 in Whittier, followed by the World Series Aug. 12-20.

CVN-Grey, as the third-place finisher in the section tourney, advanced along with CVS to regionals.

CVN’s 13-year-old all-star team finished runner-up in its section tournament to also advance to the next level. CV North  capped its trip to the regionals in Lakeside with a wild 12-11 victory against Vista this past Monday to qualify for the Super Region tourney. The CV squad rallied from what had seemed an insurmountable 9-1 Vista lead.

“It’s been very successful so far,” CVN President Saul Corona said. “We’re very fortunate to continue our good showing. We’re very proud of our three teams that have made it to the regionals.”

Hudson Pearson and Bulla Graft each smacked two-run home runs and Rob Weissenfels and Andy Rios both launched solo blasts to power CVN-Maroon in the Pony-14 South Section championship game. Hudson also picked up the win on the mound.

The hosts scored eight times in the first inning to get out to a decisive lead.

Aaron Chavez slammed three-run and two-run homers to account for all five runs for CVS in the game.

Chavez and CVS’s Abraham Villafana each collected three round-trippers in the weeklong tournament that started June 30 to finish as home run co-leaders. La Jolla’s Jack Bailey and CVN-Maroon’s Rios each finished with two homers.

The two run-rule victories posted by CVN-Maroon were dominating at both ends. Brandon Torio allowed just two hits while striking out seven batters in the 10-run win over CVN-Grey while CVN-Maroon’s hitters rapped out 14 hits. Isaac Vargas struck out six batters and allowed three hits in the 11-run win over CVS. Vargas also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a solo home run.

Other hitting highlights from the first win over CVS included a walk-off home run by Rios to end the game and a two-run home run by Tucker Torano. Graft went 3-for-4 in the contest.

With so many players on the team having played through the various tournaments to win last year’s Pony-13 World Series, they know there is still a long road ahead. Expectations are admittedly high, so the excitement level might not be that visible right now.

But that doesn’t mean the motivation isn’t there — because it is.

In fact, very much so.

“We’ve got a pretty good strong team,” Saul Corona said. “They’re a very talented team that is playing together as a team.”

“I don’t think they’re feeling a lot of pressure to win right now because the expectations are fairly high,” Joel Corona said. “You can tell they’re having fun. They’re just all improved so much from last year.”

CVN finished 2-1 in the Pony-13 section finals held June 29 to July 2 in Mira Mesa. CVN defeated La Jolla (9-5) and North City (15-0) before dropping a wild 19-18 decision to La Jolla.

In the Pony-14 sectional field, CVN-Grey defeated La Jolla to reach the challenger bracket final against CVS. CV South advanced to the championship game by defeating CVN-Grey, 5-1, on July 5.
