Hilltop softball tournament to face off this weekend

Mater Dei Catholic High School is off to a 5-1 start in girls softball after topping Patrick Henry, 10-0, on Monday to capture the Gold Division title at the Cougar Classic.

The Lady Crusaders will be among several local teams competing in this year’s Hilltop softball tournament, which was scheduled to begin Thursday and continue over the next two weekends.

Mater Dei Catholic is scheduled to play Otay Ranch at 9 a.m. and Southwest at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Bonita Vista, which is off to a 3-2 start, will play Steele Canyon at 9 a.m. and Calexico at 3 p.m.  on Saturday.
Tourney host Hilltop will play Montgomery at 9 a.m. and Valhalla at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Tournament finals are scheduled March 25.

Early season records for the Metro Conference’s South Bay League teams include Mar Vista (6-0), Chula Vista (4-0) and Castle Park 3-2. Eastlake is off to a 4-2 start among Mesa League teams.

Track & field

The Sweetwater Coed Relays are scheduled Saturday, March 18, at the National City school. The first event is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The event is scheduled to wrap up at 6:30 p.m.

Some running events are coed.

Field events are coed with two boys and two girls from each school combining for results.
Two divisions are based on school enrollment size.
