Hilltop softball tournament finals set for this Saturday Phillip Brents | Fri, Mar 30 2012 03:10 PM

The Hilltop tournament, delayed by rain on March 17, concludes this weekend with playoff finals. Quarterfinals are scheduled at 9 and 11 a.m., followed by semifinals at 1 p.m. and the championship game at 3 p.m.

Olympian and Otay Ranch, both  2-1 in tournament play, have enjoyed strong starts among Metro Conference teams entered in this year’s field. Olympian improved to 7-0 on the season after defeating El Capitan, 8-6, last Saturday. Previously, the Eagles edged El Cajon Valley, 7-5, on March 15.

Olympian tasted its first loss of the season on Wednesday against Francis Parker.

Janessa Faafiti (.600), Lauren Silva (.571), Cailee Adams (.500) and Erika Forget (.500) have keyed Olympian in the hitting department thus far. Rachel Navarro (.378) leads the team with eight RBI, followed by Faafiti and Forget each with seven RBI.

Karla Mendoza leads the team with four wins in the pitching circle while Silva has picked up three victories.

Otay Ranch recorded tourney wins against Brawley (7-1) and Mar Vista (10-0) before being cooled down by Steele Canyon (3-0 in tourney play) in a 10-1 loss last Saturday. 

Sashel Palacios paces the Mustangs with a .524 hitting average while Nikki Fernandez (.407) leads the team with 11 RBI. Jonee Rutledge (.440, 10 RBI) and Erika Rodriguez (.455. 10 RBI) also have been key contributors to the team’s early season success.

Maria Aguirre and Rutledge each have posted two wins to start the season.

In Saturday’s quarterfinals, Hilltop will meet Scripps Ranch while Olympian will battle Steele Canyon in a pair of 9 a.m. contests while Otay Ranch will face El Capitan and Clairemont will meet Southwest El Centro at 11 a.m.
