The Hilltop High School boys water polo team is off to a 2-0 start to the 2017 season after defeating the host Mt. Carmel Sundevils, 10-9, in a non-league game on Thursday, Aug. 31.
Mark Estrada, Daniel Ryan, Daniel Gonzales and Skylar Garces each scored two goals to lead the Lancers while Ryan and Garces each added two assists.
Garces, Gonzales and Ryan led the defensive effort with three steals each while Estrada made two steals. Dominic Carlucci and Gonzales each recorded one assist.
Angelo Rayoan came up big with 12 goalie saves to post the win in the cage.
Hilltop edged host Helix, 9-8, in a non-league game played last Friday, Aug. 25, to open regualr season play.
The Lancers led 2-1 after the first quarter before the teams settled into a 5-5 deadlock at halftime. Hilltop led 8-6 entering the final quarter.
Ryan 3 led the Lancers with three goals in the season opening win while Estrada, Gonzales and Garces each scored two goals. Rayoan was credited with 12 goalie saves.
