Mustangs sink Marauders, 11-6, in girls water polo opener Phillip Brents | Thu, Nov 29 2012 11:16 AM

The Otay Ranch Mustangs overcame a sluggish first half to down the Mira Mesa Marauders, 11-6, in a non-league game Thursday at the Loma Verde pool in the season opener for both teams. Srah Medina led the Mustangs in victory with eight goals, 11 steals, four ejections earned and one assist.

Nanda Arambula contributed one goal, four steals and one assist while Gabby Nunez had one goal and four steals and Kendra Gregory scored once.

Otay Ranch led by a 4-2 score at halftime despite missing on numerous scoring opportunities that could have widened the lead.

The Mustangs out-scored the Marauders 7-2 in the second half.

Otay Ranch defeated Mar Vista, 11-3, in a preseason scrimmage on Wednesday. Medina led the defending Mesa League champion Mustangs with nine goals, five steals and two ejections earned, while Arambula had one goal and five steals and Alessandra Corrao scored once.

Cailin Lechner had three steals and one assist, while Nunez had two steals, Camila Benitez had one steal and Emma Cornwell had five goalie saves.

The Mustangs opened the pre-season with a 7-3 victory against West Hills in the Draz Classic on Nov. 17. Medina had five goals, five steals and six ejections earned in the scrimmage contest.

Bonita Vista Barons
The Bonita Vista Barons will be fielding what coach Betty Alexander referred to as a “very young team” this season. Varsity returners include sophomore goalie Josie Fialko and junior Rory Broyles. “We played in the Draz Classic and did well for the first competition of the season, only having three days to practice together as a team,” Alexander said.

Fialko played well with 11 blocks, including a five-meter penalty shot, while Broyles scored two goals. “I have high hopes for our team this year and the next three years,” Alexander said.

The Barons have just one senior on their roster this season: Destiny Castallan. Alexander noted that transfer Larissa Lucatero, formerly at Otay Ranch, is another strong player added to the line-up. “I have high hopes for her,” the BVHS coach said.

Mater Dei Crusaders

Gabrielle Garcia (two-meters), Skania Lemus (attacker) and fellow senior Lynn San Ramon will be leading the way for the Lady Aqua Crusaders in 2012-13, according to coach Guy Souza. Also expected to play vital roles for the team are juniors Sofia Posada, Yessenia Lugo and Dalia Chavez.

Junior Lindsey Finch, who had 13 blocks against La Jolla Country Day in this year’s Draz Classic, will anchor the cage.
