Former Bonita Vista High School standout Eric Avila recently earned All-American honors by placing sixth in the men’s 1,500-meter run at the NAIA national track & field championships while competing for Southern Oregon University.

The top eight runners in each track event earned the All-American designation.

Thirty-two runners from colleges in Canada and the United States qualified to compete in the 1,500 national championship race.

Avila timed 3:49.10 in the 1,500 to cement his All-American status. Oklahoma Christian’s Silas Kisorio won the event in 3:41.39, a new meet record.

The NAIA outdoor championship meet took place May 24-26 in Marion, Ind.

During his career at Bonita Vista High School, Avila won multiple league and San Diego Section championships in cross county and track, was the CIF Runner of the Year in 2007, and was the California State champion in the 3,200 meters.

This year at Southern Oregon University, Avila was the Cascade Collegiate Conference champion in the 1,500 meters and placed third in the 5,000 meters.
