The San Diego Section girls golf individual and team championships are scheduled next Tuesday through Thursday at Admiral Baker Golf Course. Metro Conference qualifiers will compete alongside qualifiers from other teams and individuals from around the section.
The Mesa League’s 18-hole championship tournament wrapped up Oct. 23 at the Cottonwood Golf Club-The Lakes to determine qualifiers to the CIF tournament. Mater Dei Catholic’s Jessica Mangrobang scored a 77 on the par-36 course to earn top individual honors.
Following her lead were Hilltop’s Leanna Mena (85), Bonita Vista’s Mackayla Swanson (95), Mater Dei Catholic’s Lindsey Finch (97) and Natalia Olazabal (98) and Eastlake’s Jessica Hoshina (100).
The South Bay League championship tournament took place Oct. 22-23 at Bonita Golf Club and Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course, a combined 72-par tournament.
First team selections included Chula Vista’s Lizette Arteaga, Delia Munoz, Emily Longoria, Cerissa Olguin and Kimberly Figueroa and Sweetwater’s Sarah Garcia.
Second team selections included Montgomery’s Giselle Deguzman, Mar Vista’s Alexis Patacsil, Chula Vista’s Jacqueline Puga, Montgomery’s Linda Cerda, Mar Vista’s Rebecca Smith and Sweetwater’s Andrea Cortez.
Munoz topped all scorers at the league finals with a two-day total of 97, followed by Longoria (99), Olguin (99), Figueroa (105) and Garcia (111).
The top two teams and top 12 individuals not on either of the top two teams at the section finals advance to compete at the Southern California regional tournament Nov. 14 at The Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrieta.
Devils place 2nd at Jaguar Invitational
Led by Gerardo Marquillo’s sixth-place individual finish and braced by three place-finishers among the top eight individuals and four in the top 11, the Sweetwater boys cross country team finished second at last Friday’s Jaguar Invitational at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. The Red Devils finished a scant two points behind team champion Mt. Carmel in the large school varsity division.
Marquillo navigated the three-mile course in 16:28, followed by teammates Bryan Alvardo (seventh, 16:32), Carlos Aviles-Sullivan (eighth, 16:36), Alexis Diaz De Leon (11th, 16:41) and Carlos Bernal (22nd, 16:54).
Mt. Carmel’s Derek Morton led all finishers in the 113-deep race with a winning time of 15:43.
The Red Devils also left their mark in the large school varsity girls race as Erika Gonzalez finished second among individuals with a time of 16:52 (2.7 miles). Sweetwater finished eighth in the team standings.
In the small school varsity division, Montgomery paced Metro Conference teams with a fifth-place finish among boys squads, followed by Southwest (ninth) and San Ysidro (17th). Southwest finished 10th in the girls team standings, followed by Montgomery (11th) and San Ysidro (13th).
