Falcons extend wings in 11-0 win over Spartans

The Scripps Ranch High School roller hockey team has not had its full team together all season but that is about to change. The Falcons’ contingent of ice and roller hockey players are expected to fill out a complete line-up in preparation for Wednesday’s North County League game against the Poway Titans.

Scripps Ranch is scheduled to close out regular season play Friday with a non-league game against Cathedral Catholic.

Central League champion Cathedral Catholic, which entered the week with a 9-4 record, is ranked second overall among the CIF-Metro Conference’s 17 teams while Poway, which entered the week 9-6 overall, is ranked fourth.

“We’ve played teams like Westview close … they’re probably the No. 3 seed,” SRHS coach Greg Friedman said. “We’ll finally have our full team together, and we’ll see how we do in those two games. That should give us a better idea for the upcoming playoffs.”

The Falcons skated past the Chula Vista Spartans, 11-0, in a non-league encounter Monday night at the Castle Park High School roller rink. The game was competitive despite the score, with Falcon netminder Casey Wu forced to make several difficult saves while his counterpart at the other end of the floor, Chula Vista’s Michael Goze, registered 40 stops.

“He’s a big guy,” Friedman noted of Goze’s prowess at absorbing shots and sucking in rebounds.

Freshman Matt Gauthier led Scripps Ranch (7-10 overall, including one overtime loss) with three goals and four assists while Wesley Rim tallied three times, Leo Gaffrey had two goals and one assist, Jimmy Musser contributed a goal and assist and Jesse Lycan and Taegen Warren each scored one goal.

Wu, who has stood out as the Falcons’ hero between the pipes this season, received credit for the shutout.

Scripps Ranch rolled out to a 6-0 lead after the first period. It was at that point that the Spartans (7-12-1) finally got their rhythm going.

The upcoming Kiwanis Cup championship playoffs should be interesting. The top-ranked Rancho Bernardo Broncos entered the week with an unblemished 16-0 record while Cathedral Catholic, Westview (12-4 entering the week) and Poway followed in the rankings.

Eastlake, which edged Scripps Ranch and St. Augustine in a pair of nail-biters, could receive the No. 5 seed, with Scripps Ranch and St. Augustine likely receiving the next two seeds in either order.

“We’ll likely finish as the No. 6 or No. 7 seed,” Friedman noted.

The Falcons have had a lot of success this season despite fielding a team laden with underclassmen. Friedman said he has four freshmen in the line-up along with two sophomores and two seniors.

“After you get past Poway with Eric Wright, the next five teams are pretty even,” Friedman said. “Rancho Bernardo is a good team, and Westview is right up there when they have all their guys together.”

The Broncos are the latest team to chase Scripps Ranch’s undefeated 22-0-0 championship season in 2003-04. However, while Rancho Bernardo has the opportunity to post an undefeated season, the Broncos will likely not be able to match the Falcons’ celebrated 22-win total.

“Ironically, the best two teams I had at Scripps Ranch were the two teams that followed that undefeated season,” Friedman said.

Lycan leads the Falcons with 38 goals and 25 assists for 62 points while Shaun Simmons, a senior, ranks second on the team with 22 goals and 23 assists for 45 points.

Lycan rolled into Monday’s game after playing an ice hockey game with the Jr. Gulls in Phoenix.

Lycan, a forward in ice hockey, has established himself as one of the conference’s top skill players while playing up from defense.

“In roller hockey, it’s not that you play with one less defenseman but more like you play with three forwards and one defenseman,” Friedman said. “In roller hockey, one defenseman jumps forward into the play.”

Friedman said Lycan’s strengths revolve around his hockey IQ. “He’s smart,” Friedman assessed of Lycan. “He sees the whole surface and makes the plays.”

Lycan is following in the footsteps of several former Falcon greats, among the most notable being C.J. Ruhwedel and Dan Comrie.

Comrie, the CIF-Metro Conference’s first superstar, went on to play Junior ice hockey while Ruhwedel went on to star at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell before signing with the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL.

“Jesse reminds me a lot of both C.J. and Dan Comrie,” Friedman said. “He knows where everyone is going to be. He’s been playing hockey since he was 5, so his hockey IQ is up there.”

Lycan admitted he is inspired by Ruhwedel’s hockey journey from Scripps Ranch High School to the NHL.

“I feel inspired by him,” Lycan said of Ruhwedel. “He’s become a role model for the community.”

Lycan, who gained notoriety when his L.A. Hockey Club Pee Wee AAA team placed third at the 2012 ice hockey nationals, also admits excitement about San Diego’s new pro hockey team in the American Hockey League. The team, which will serve as the AAA affiliate of the NHL Anaheim Ducks, will officially reveal its name and logo at Sunday’s San Diego HockeyFest at the Valley View Casino Center (formerly Sports Arena).

The free event runs from noon to 3 p.m., with free T-shirts to the first 1,000 fans and free hot dogs and soft drinks available for fans. An array of fun family-friendly events are planned, including a hardest shot contest and appearances by the Ducks’ street team and Power Players dance squad.

In another non-league game played Monday at CPHS:

Bonita Vista 2, Southwest 0
The Barons (9-11) received a goal and an assist from both Matt Custodio and Chris Miguel in turning back the Raiders (7-13).

Mar Vista triumphs in annual battle for The Puck

It might seem like an ordinary puck from a distance but upon closer inspection, the multi-colored disc reveals its true nature. One side is green and sports a stylized “MV” to stand for Mar Vista. The other side is Southwest Raiders red.

The rivalry between the two schools exists in other sports, most notably in football where the teams compete in the “Battle for the Bell.”

The schools’ hockey rivalry obviously includes a puck.

The Raiders have had possession of the rivalry “trophy” for the past three seasons, but no longer after Mar Vista claimed back the prize object following Tuesday’s 3-2 South Bay League victory.

The final game between the teams is deemed the annual “puck” game.

“Everyone on our team is super proud the puck is back in the possession of Mar Vista – it’s the first time in my career here that we’ve won it,” Mariner standout Cindy Moeller said. “The puck means so much in our rivalry with Southwest. Our rivalry is pretty healthy. I’m looking forward to next year and defending it; I’m looking forward to seeing what they will bring (to win it back).”

Moeller scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in Tuesday’s win that elevated Mar Vista to a tie with Chula Vista for second place in the league standings. Austin Hoffman scored the Mariners’ first goal while Eloy Rodriguez scored Mar Vista’s second goal.

Joshua Lopez got Southwest rolling in the game with the Raiders’ first goal. Nefi Hernandez scored the team’s second goal.

After the game, MVHS goaltender Dane Bottomley received a hero’s toast from his teammates. Bottomley voluntarily gave up a field position so the team would have a goaltender this season.

The Mariners (4-3-1 in league play) ended regular season play 7-13-1 overall; Southwest (4-4 in league play) fell to 7-14 overall.

In another South Bay League game played Tuesday at the Castle Park High School rink:

Chula Vista 12, Sweetwater 3

The Spartans secured a second-place finish (along with Mar Vista) in the league standings by turning back the Red Devils. Hector Garcia led the victors with six goals while David Garcia collected two goals and three assists, Abraham Carlon scored twice and Allison Smith had a goal and assist.

Sweetwater’s Phillip Brandon was credited with a goal and assist.

The Spartans improved to 8-12-1 on the season while the Red Devils dropped to 0-21.

Chula Vista and Mar Vista both finished with 4-3-1 league records.

In a non-league game played Tuesday at the Castle Park High School rink:

Castle Park 2, Bonita Vista 1

Julian DeAlba and Marvin Cirignano each scored goals to lead the newly-crowned South Bay League champion Trojans (11-7 overall) to a victory.

CPHS head coach Eric Enciso said the team’s key to success, particularly in the second half of the season, has been its ability to adapt to new strategy.

“We’ve been trying a lot of new things,” Enciso explained. “It’s been working out when we play together.”

The Trojans, who finished 7-1 in league play, look to be strong again next season. Castle Park has three seniors on its roster this season along with eight juniors.

Leo Gurrola scored the lone goal for Bonita Vista, which saw its record slip to 9-12 on the season.

DeAlba also picked up an assist for Castle Park.

Mesa League teams end season with a flourish; Titans claim title

The four teams that comprise the Mesa League each brought their best games to the floor Wednesday as league play wrapped up. Both games were highly competitive and riveting to watch.

Hilltop and Bonita Vista, which share an 18-year rivalry, faced off the double-header with one of the best games played all season at the Castle Park High School roller rink. The game was scoreless deep into the contest and then tied 1-1 for most of the rest of the game.

Bonita Vista went up 1-0 on a goal by Leo Gurrola and Hilltop tied it when Danny Godinez scored off a pass from teammate Andrew Tesner.

The back-and-forth game remained tied at a goal apiece until 4:10 left in the third period when Godinez scored on a long shot over the shoulder of BV netminder Hawk Anderson.

Esteban Martinez then scored on a sharp angle shot with 29 seconds left in the game to clinch the win for the Lancers, who secured sole possession of third place in the league standings.

Hilltop finished 2-4 in league play (15-7 overall) while Bonita Vista finished 0-6 in league play (though several games were excruciatingly narrow losses).

“This was one of the best games we’ve played this season,” HHS head coach Dan Vaccaro said. “It was a 1-1 game to the last period. Our kids came out on top at the end, but I give a lot of credit to Bonita Vista coach Keith Quigley. He always gets the most out of what he has.”

Quigley, whose tenure in the sport is eclipsed only by Vaccaro’s 19 years with the Lancers, said this season’s Barons team has left him with a lot of pleasant memories.

“We gave it everything we had,” he said in reference to the loss to longtime rival Hilltop.

Bonita Vista finished regular season play 9-13 and is hopeful of being included in this year’s 12-team Kiwanis Cup championship playoff field.

Eastlake 11, Otay Ranch 4

It just might be time to dub Eastlake’s Aaron Mayer with the ultimate nickname in hockey: The Great One. On a night when he broke his own personal record for single-season scoring in the Metro Conference, Mayer put on a show with spectacular moves, deft passes and breathtaking goals to secure his position as certainly the top scoring player in Titan history.

Mayer collected four goals and four assists to lead Eastlake to its third consecutive Mesa League championship title. Linemates Sam Bawden (four goals, two assists) and Michael Mechling (three goals, one assist) put on a dazzling display of skating and scoring prowess to wow the crowd.

The Titans completed league play with an undefeated 6-0 record and the regular season with an 18-2 overall record, inclusive of Tuesday’s 11-5 non-league loss to second-ranked Cathedral Catholic. Eastlake finished 15-0 in competition against other Sweetwater district teams this season.

Mayer set a CIF record with 158 points last season, regular season and playoffs combined. He has 164 points this season heading into the Kiwanis Cup championship playoffs.

Mayer had two goals and two assists in the loss to Cathedral Catholic to enter Wednesday’s game needing just two points to tie last season’s record. He drew assists on the Titans’ opening two goals to tie his record and then scored an unassisted goal to push Eastlake to a 5-1 lead to establish a new record.

The game was close for the first 10 minutes before the Titans scored two power play goals to zip in front 4-1 at the end of the opening period. Devyn Taras, who also showcased his hockey talent on the playing surface, scored all four Mustang goals to trim Eastlake’s lead to 9-4. However, the Titans went on another goal-scoring spurt to end the game. Mayer scored the final goal of the game unassisted.

William Hamilton, who is now paired much of the time with Mayer, Bawden and Mechling, picked up one assist in the win.

Ricky Portilla was credited with one assist for Otay Ranch. Three of Taras’ four goals were unassisted.

The Mustangs finished league play 4-2 and take a 16-4 overall record (with one forfeit loss) into the Kiwanis Cup playoffs.

Kiwanis Cup championship playoffs are just around the corner

Sweetwater district high school roller hockey teams wrapped up regular season play Thursday at the Castle Park High School rink. What lies ahead could be exciting.

The Kiwanis Cup championship playoffs are scheduled to face off Monday, Feb. 23, at sites to be determined. Twelve teams in all will be included, with eight teams participating in first-round play.

The next three rounds include quarterfinals, semifinals and finals (championship and third-place games).

Four Sweetwater district teams competed in the opening round of last year’s Kiwanis Cup playoffs. It appears at least that many will qualify this season.

The team selection meeting is Saturday.

North County League champion Rancho Bernardo (17-0) is bidding to join Scripps Ranch as the only other team in CIF-Metro Conference history to complete an undefeated season. The Falcons accomplished that feat during the 2003-04 season when they went 22-0.

Central League champion Cathedral Catholic (11-5), Westview (13-5) and Poway (9-7) are all vying for top four seeds — and first-round byes. Both Mesa League champion Eastlake (18-2) and Mesa League runner-up Otay Ranch (16-4) are bidding for home-field advantage in the opening round.

Castle Park (11-7) qualified as the South Bay League champion. Other Sweetwater district teams bidding for playoff berths include Hilltop (15-7), Bonita Vista (9-13) and possibly even Chula Vista (9-12-1) and Mar Vista (7-13-1).

Scripps Ranch (9-10, with one overtime loss) from the North County League and St. Augustine (8-12) from the Central League are also clearly in the mix. St. Augustine defeated Otay Ranch, 9-4, early in the season and lost ,8-7, in overtime more recently against Eastlake in a pair of key non-league match-ups.

Eastlake edged Scripps Ranch, 11-10, in a highly entertaining contest while St. Augustine managed to slip past Scripps Ranch in their most recent meeting.

West Hills (3-15) and La Jolla Country Day (3-16) bring up the rear among the non-Sweetwater district teams but are still formidable opponents in their own right. LJCD lost 20-4 to Eastlake but defeated Mar Vista (11-0), Hilltop (7-2) and Southwest (6-0) in three other games against Sweetwater district opponents. Otay Ranch nipped West Hills, 9-6, in a recent non-league encounter.

Bonita Vista, Chula Vista and Mar Vista all have traded wins with one another this season. Both Chula Vista and Mar Vista tied for second place in the South Bay League standings this season.

Chula Vista 5, Sweetwater 4
The Red Devils came ever so close to earning their first win of the season, only to have those hopes dashed in a non-league overtime loss to the Spartans. Chula Vista led, 4-2, midway through the game, but the Devils scored the last two goals of the game to send it into overtime.

However, Sweetwater entered the extra five-minute period killing two penalties, which proved fatal. The Devils were assessed a tripping penalty as time expired in regulation play. That penalty began at the start of overtime. Then, 34 seconds into the overtime period, Sweetwater was assessed a roughing penalty to go two players down on the court.

Still, the Devils almost escaped unscathed. Chula Vista was unable to score on the first penalty, which expired with 3:00 to play in the OT period. The Spartans finally scored with 13 seconds left in the second penalty, which was set to expire at the 2:26 mark. The game-winning goal came with 2:39 to play in the sudden-victory period.

Marco Garcia led the Spartans with three goals while Hector Garcia had a goal and assist, David Garcia scored once and Abraham Carlon added one assist.

Luis Trevino had two goals and David Baltazar had a goal and assist to lead the Devils, who finished the season 0-22.

La Jolla Country Day 6, Southwest 0
The Torreys, despite playing with a skeleton crew, managed to post the shutout over the Raiders in the non-league game. The win was the third against 16 losses for LJCD this season.

Senior Grayson Lyman had a hand in all six goals by the Torreys with four goals and two assists. Nathan Russell and Rohi Parikh each had a goal and assist while Andrew Bialock picked up one assist. Quinn Skerlos recorded the shutout victory.

Falcons enter playoffs on a roll after besting Poway, Cathedral Catholic

The Scripps Ranch High School roller hockey team provided the upset element in last year’s Kiwanis Cup championship playoffs. Don’t look now, but the Falcons — now at full strength in the player department — appear up to it again.

Scripps Ranch pulled off a couple of upsets to end regular season play by defeating Poway, 10-6, and second-ranked Cathedral Catholic 6-4.

Jesse Lycan had three goals and one assist in the win over Cathedral Catholic on Friday while Shaun Simmons had two goals and one assist, Matt Gauthier had one goal and one assist, and Stewie Pond and Taegan Warren each collected one assist.

Drew Jones led the Dons with two goals, while Sam Angeles and Matt Dammeyer each had one goal, and John Leone and Will Davaney each had one assist.

The first period ended 1-1 and the teams were tied, 2-2, after the second period. In the third period, the Falcons took the lead on a Gauthier goal from Simmons.  Cathedral tied it on a Dammeyer goal. With six minutes remaining, Scripps Ranch took the lead on a Simmons goal, assist by Lycan.  Lycan then iced the game on a goal with 30 seconds to play.

In Wednesday’s North County League finale, Poway took the initial lead on a goal by Kit Carter and the first ended 2-1 in Poway’s favor.  In the second period, it became a battle of good friends — Shaun Simmons for Scripps Ranch and Eric Wright for Poway — who have been playing youth ice hockey together since they were in grade school.  Simmons shadowed Wright the entire game and both players tried to beat their childhood friend. Both players scored four goals, but Simmons came on top with three assists to Wright’s none.

Wright did his best to try and win the game by making spectacular passes for shots, but Falcon goaltender Casey Wu made several amazing saves. In the end, the depth of the SRHS team was too much for Poway.

West Hills 10, La Jolla Country Day 9
In a game played Wednesday to wrap up Central League play, Grayson Lyman of LJCD matched up against Cade Frederick of West Hills.  Lyman finished the game with five goals and three assists, while Frederick four goals and three assists.  West Hills pulled out the victory despite playing with just four skaters and a goaltender.

San Diego HockeyFest slated Sunday
