Eastlake swimming: Casimiro and Co. are back for more Phillip Brents | Fri, Mar 30 2012 03:18 PM

The deluge on March 17 that wiped out most high school sporting events in San Diego County did not affect, as one might suspect, swimming. The Sundevil Invitational at Mt. Carmel High School went on, with a notable outcome for the Eastlake Titans.

“It was a cold and wet 13 hours at the pool but it was a lot of fun, too!” EHS coach Bryan Monzon said. “We had several personal best times and some outstanding individual races.”

Monzon called this year’s EHS boys team “stacked.” The Titans certainly put on a good show by nailing down a sixth-place team finish in the 18-team field.

Senior Luca Casimiro and junior Jian Miclat did most of the damage. Casimiro notched a second-place finish in the boys 100-yard butterfly (52.79) and a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:00.79) while Miclat touched third in the 50 freestyle (22.76) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (50.86).

Both also swam legs on Eastlake’s third-place 200 medley relay unit (1:45.92) and third-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:29.78).

Joining Casimiro and Miclat on the 200 medley relay unit were sophomore John Randazzo and senior Josue Alvarez.

Sophomore Jimmy Jeffery and senior Michael Tong also swam legs on the 400 freestyle unit.
Randazzo (last year’s Mesa League 500 freestyle champion) qualified for the 100 breaststroke finals, placing seventh in 1:06.74.

Casimiro (the defending Mesa League champion in both the 200 IM and butterfly events) set a meet record in the 200 IM (1:56.94) last year, though La Costa Canyon senior Mickey Mackle set a new record with a 1:54.22 this year.

In B-heat finals, Adam Hilborn finished 15th in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.93) while Tong finished 16th in the 100 freestyle (55.50).

The EHS quartet of Jeffery, Dylan Chase, Hilborn and Tong finished 11th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.95).

The EHS girls finished 16th in the team standings. Jana Miclat finished 14th in the girls 100 backstroke (1:07.33) while the foursome of Kelsey Schauer, Mia Lam, Kerry Lindsay and Miclat placed 10th in the 400 freestyle relay (4:01.07).
