Eastlake, Hilltop advance to semifinals in CIF girls soccer playoffs Phillip Brents | Tue, Feb 26 2013 12:52 AM

The Eastlake Titans and Hilltop Lancers high school girls soccer teams battled down to the wire for this year’s Mesa League championship. Now they’re battling for a berth in this weekend’s San Diego Section championship finals.

The second-seeded Titans (13-2-6) shaded visiting San Pasqual, 1-0, in last Friday’s Division I quarterfinals to earn a spot in Tuesday’s semifinals opposite sixth-seeded Torrey Pines (12-8-1).

Meanwhile, the fifth-seeded Lancers (16-4-3) will tackle Division II behemoth La Costa Canyon (17-4-3) in Tuesday’s Division II semifinals after edging fourth-seeded Scripps Ranch in a penalty kick shootout last Friday.

Kick-off for both semifinal games is 5 p.m.

Blyss McCann scored in the third minute off a corner kick feed by Ang Boyd and goalkeeper Jojo McCaskill recorded five saves, including a pair of spectacular stops, to secure the shutout victory for Eastlake.

“Both teams had other chances to score in the game but it turned out that first goal was it,” EHS Scott Burress said.

The goal was McCann’s fourth this season to rank second on the team in that department; the shutout was McCaskill’s sixth.

Torrey Pines defeated host Rancho Buena Vista, 3-1, in opening round of playoff action on Feb. 19. The Falcons scored three goals in the first half to seize the momentum against the third-seeded Longhorns.

The Eastlake-Torrey Pines winner advances to the championship game Friday, March 1, at 6 p.m. at Mesa College against either top-seeded Carlsbad (13-2-5) or fourth-seeded Poway (10-8-2).

Hilltop, 2-1 victors over visiting San Ysidro in the opening round, traveled to Scripps Ranch for last Friday’s quarterfinals and played the Falcons to a scoreless stalemate on the field through 80 minutes of regulation and a 15-minute sudden-victory overtime period.

The Lancers won 5-3 in the PK shootout. Lancer goalkeeper Amber White stopped the Falcons in the PK shootout and also notched the overtime shutout.

LCC trounced visiting Bonita Vista, 5-0, last Friday as Pilar Torres scored twice and Lexy Solomon, Danielle Goad and Hayley Mayne each tallied once. Mavericks goalkeepers Kristin Tincup and Staci Burland each played 40 minutes to share the shutout.

Bonita Vista’s Charlotte Guerrero made eight saves but allowed five goals. The ninth-seeded Barons ended an otherwise fine season 17-8-1.

Interestingly, LCC outshot Bonita Vista just 13-11 in the match.

The Hilltop-LCC winner advances to the championship game on Saturday, March 2, at 1:30 p.m. at Del Norte High School against either second-seeded Westview (17-6-2) or third-seeded Steele Canyon (22-1-1).
