Kindred Lowman earned honors as Eastlake's Player of the Game in helping lead the host Titans to a 15-4 non-league win over Point Loma in its 2013 season opener on Tuesday. Lowman led Eastlake with nine goals in the game.
"It was nice to play a game because we had to cancel a scrimmage because of the soccer playoffs," EHS coach Robert Blas said. "We still have some work to do but what's nice to know is that we can score."
Sarah Garces scored four goals for the Titans, who also received two goals from Alexyss McClellan.
The Titans return nine starters from their 2011-12 team that came in second place in the Mesa League. Lowman joined the team midway through last season and has picked up right where she left off.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mar Sabado had five saves and allowed only four goals in the season opener.
Players to watch include defenders Jacky Ponce, Haley Watkins, Alexis Donaldson and Mariella Romo, midfielders McClellan and Gillian Stargensky and attackers Garces and Kayla Lawson.
Stargensky was Eastlake’s field hockey MVP during the fall sports season and earned first team all-league recognition during the just completed girls soccer season as the Titans won the San Diego Section Division I championship title.
Other notables, according to Blas, include defender/attacker Bianca Clawson, midfielder Chelsea Araos and defender/attacker Yvonne Apodaca.
Update: Garces and Lowman each had four goals in a 13-9 loss to visiting Granite Hills on March 12. The Titans held their own with 22 shots to 18 for the Eagles. Sabado had five saves in the loss.
Defending Metro Conference champion Hilltop has faced off its season 1-2 with a victory against Santa Fe Christian (7-6 on March 7) and a pair of losses to Mission Hills (14-8 on March 12) and Rancho Bernardo (10-6 on March 14).
