Eastlake boys soccer team is off to optimistic start in 2012-13 Phillip Brents | Fri, Dec 21 2012 01:41 PM

The Eastlake High School boys soccer team has started the 2012-13 season on an upbeat note after compiling a 3-4-1 record entering the winter break. New coach Jason Renfro is optimistic about the unfolding prep campaign considering the Titans finished 4-13-4 in 2011-12.

“Last year, the team didn’t get its first win until its sixth game of the season,” Renfro said. “Already we have almost as many wins as all of last season. I’m excited about our junior class. So far, so good.”

Eastlake finished 1-2-1 in the season opening Coronado Islanders tournament and followed that with a 2-2 showing at the San Diego holiday tournament.

Wins have come against Granite Hills (2-0 at the Islander Invitational), Hoover (4-2 at the San Diego tourney) and Escondido Charter (2-1 at the San Diego tourney).

Junior Rodrigo Flores and sophomore Adam Vargas scored goals in the win over Granite Hills, a longtime Division I power, while junior Jose Cervantes made 14 saves to record the shutout.

Junior Rudy Garcia-Soriano scored twice and Vargas and senior Marcus Adachi each tacked on single goals in the victory against Hoover. Junior Oscar Hernandez had a goal and assist and Vargas scored once to defeat Escondido Charter.

Through eight games, Vargas tops the Titans in scoring with three goals and one assist, followed on the score sheet by Hernandez with two goals and one assist and Garcia-Soriano with two goals.

Cervantes has been active with 102 saves, including 23 in a 4-3 loss to Chula Vista at the San Diego tournament on Monday.

Adachi led the team in scoring last season with seven goals.

“The overall chemistry of the squad is building with each practice,” Renfro said. “The young men are amazing to be around and their dedication in the classroom is as strong as the one they display on the field.”

Eastlake will host Sweetwater in a 5 p.m. non-league match on Jan. 3. The Titans will follow with a non-league game at San Ysidro on Jan. 7 prior to kicking off Mesa League play Jan. 15 at Bonita Vista.

“My goals at Eastlake are to build a cohesive group of student-athletes who are willing to work hard toward achieving success on the playing field,” Renfro said. “Expectations are high and, with (our) growing chemistry, this will only help us as we enter league play.”
