The Maranatha Christian Eagles scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to erase a 26-22 Kuyper Prep lead to capture this year's Sunset League championship with a 34-26 victory over the visiting Admirals last Friday (Nov. 11). Kuyper Prep (5-1 in league, 7-1 overall) led 20-10 at the end of the first quarter and 26-22 at halftime.
David Lozoya and Markus Fulford each scored two touchdowns for the Admirals, who suffered their first loss of the season. Greg Marshall threw two TD passes in the loss.
Jake Kirby (17 completions in 30 attempts for 252 passing yards) led Maranatha’s comeback. He scored threw three touchdown passes and also rushed for one score in the game.
Chad Rocha (one catch, 46 yards), Michael Trent (four catches, 65 yards) and Jack Olmstead (five catches, 65 yards) each caught touchdown passes for the Eagles (6-0 in league, 8-1 overall). Rocha also received credit for a two-point safety.
Kirby also rushed 10 times for 72 yards. Max Schwan rushed twice for 38 yards while also accumulating 76 receiving yards on seven receptions.
Josiah Rubia keyed the Maranatha defense with 26 tackles, including 19 first hits. Rocha completed a standout night with two fumble recoveries on defense while Derek Olsen blocked one punt.
Marshall completed 10 of 19 passing attempts for 105 yards. Fulford paced the Kuyper Prep rushing attack with 145 yards on 21 carries, including one 75-yard gain. Steven Hannibal had 51 yards on 10 carries to further bolster a ground game that amassed 241 yards.
Fulford had three catches for 45 yards while Lozoya made three grabs for 35 yards. Fulford had one catch go for 34 yards while Lozoya had a 33-yard catch-and-carry in the game.
On defense, Lozoya and Fulford each had one interception while Hannibal had one fumble recovery.
Maranatha set itself up for a grab at the championship title after defeating Ocean View Christian Academy, 22-20, on Nov. 4. Kirby, Trent and Olmstead each scored touchdowns to lead the Eagles. A pair of two-point conversions (one each by Kirby and Olsen) proved to be the difference, however.
Andres Perez passed for two touchdowns — one each to Josh Smith and Joseph Alexander — to lead Ocean View (4-2 in league, 7-3 overall). Raul Rodriguez scored one rushing touchdown.
Rodriguez rushed for 157 yards on 19 carries to lead the Patriots.
The Maranatha Christian defense recorded three sacks in the game while Ocean View made three fumble recoveries.
