Eagles fly high with South Bay League boys lacrosse title

This year’s Olympian High School boys lacosse team made history by capturing the first league championship in the sport at the school.

The Eagles defeated host Southwest, 12-0, on April 26 to improve to 7-0 in South Bay League play. With two league games remaining on its schedule, that was enough for Olympian to secure rights to this year’s league title.

“We’re very excited to be South Bay League champions,” Eagles head coach Keith Quigley explained. “At the start of the season our goals were to win league and get a playoff berth and we accomplished both. We have a really tight group of players this season with great team chemistry.

“Being that we are only a fifth- year program, we’re thrilled with what we have done so far this season. The players have worked hard … I’m really happy for them.”

The Eagles defeated host Mar Vista, 14-0, on Monday to improve to 8-0 in league play.

Olympian (11-9 overall) closed out regular season play on Wednesday by defeating visiting Chula Vista, 12-3, on Senior Night. The team is losing seven seniors from its championshp team.

The Eagles enter the playoffs  having won 10 of their last 11 games.

Olympian defeated host Mira Mesa, 12-3, in a non-league game on April 27.

The Eagles faced off the season with a 1-8 record while playing a challenging non-league schedule. A new season is set to dawn in the upcoming section playoffs.

Any necessary play-in games are scheduled Monday,May 8. First round games in the Division II field are scheduled Wednesday, May 10, followed by the quarterfinals on May 13 and semifinals on May 17.
