Chula Vista Spartans hoop women are 6-0 in South Bay League play Phillip Brents | Fri, Jan 25 2013 12:52 PM

The Chula Vista High School girls basketball team topped visiting Southwest, 65-18, last Friday to improve to 6-0 in South Bay League play.

The Spartans, who built a 36-8 halftime lead, improved to 12-7 overall. Four CV players hit double figures in the scoring column: Anessa Wolfblack and C.C. Goudeau with 13 points each, Samantha Miranda with 12 points and Sierra Thomas with 11 points. Wolfblack also had 11 rebounds.

Wolfblack leads the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game, followed by Thomas at 8.5 ppg.

The Spartans host Castle Park on Friday. Tip-off is 7 p.m. The Trojans improved to 9-5 overall, 3-2 in league play, after edging visiting Montgomery, 42-39, last Friday.

Barons tip off to surprising 3-0 Mesa start

The Bonita Vista Barons improved to 3-0 in Mesa League play after defeating the host Hilltop Lancers, 49-36, on Wednesday. The comeback win came on the heels of last Friday’s 56-41 victory against the visiting Eastlake Titans. “We’re maturing, we’re starting to gel,” BVHS coach Wayne Wooten said.

Kelsey Ferko led the Barons (9-10 overall) with 14 points against Eastlake, followed by teammates Ashley Quilodit (13 points) and Carol Schroeder (11 points). Ferko and Schroeder each had 15 rebounds. Eastlake, which fell to 0-3 in league play, 12-7 overall, after Wednesday’s 50-37 loss at Olympian, received 17 points from Taylor Smalley and 15 points from Trianna Arreola. Quilodit led Bonita Vista with 12 points against Hilltop.

Defending league champion Mater Dei Catholic defeated visiting Olympian, 70-34, last Friday to improve to 2-0 in league play, 10-4 overall. Four Crusaders scored in double digits: Alexandria Young with 14 points, Kristine Sellona with 13 points, Kandiss Barber with 12 points and Kiden Gowolo with 10 points. Barber had 12 rebounds while Brittani Lusain had eight steals.

Young had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Barber collected 18 points and 12 rebounds as Mater Dei Catholic edged Serra, 50-49, in a MLK Showcase game Monday at Hoover High School. The Crusaders reversed a one-point deficit entering the fourth quarter by out-scoring the Conquistadors 12-10 in the final period.
