Crusaders score 21-18 comeback win over Komets in season debut Phillip Brents | Fri, Sep 06 2013 02:24 PM

The Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders came out on top in a see-saw season opening affair with the visiting Kearny Komets last Friday to post a dramatic 21-18 come-from-behind win.

The Crusaders opened up a 14-0 first quarter lead only to fall behind by a score of 18-14 in the fourth quarter.

Iman Chatman-Dixon caught a 66-yard aerial from quarterback Marco Morales to get the hosts going and Morales later passed 64 yards to Nick Conlin for another score.

Kearny’s Steven Fanning cut into that early lead with a 33-yard scoring run. The Komets continued their comeback with a touchdown in the second quarter to trim the MDC lead to 14-12 at halftime.

Suddenly down by four points, the Crusaders would not be denied a season opening victory as Morales completed his third touchdown pass of the game, this time to Evan Bebee.

“We are excited to be 1-0,” MDCHS coach John Joyner said. “We didn’t play as well as we would have liked, and had too many turnovers on offense, but our defense really played great forcing five turnovers and we are happy with a win against a good team like Kearny.”

Morales finished the game with 276 passing yards. On defense, Chatman-Dixon also had an interception and two forced fumbles while Conlin had one pick.

Mike Pimentel had a fumble recovery while Sebastian Kelly blocked a field goal attempt. Eric Flores paced the team with 12 tackles, followed by Damon Willis with 11 stops and Hunter Allen with 10 tackles.

Mater Dei Catholic will host El Capitan on Friday in a battle of early season unbeatens. The Vaqueros are coming off a lopsided 70-0 non-league victory against Peace River (Alberta, Canada).

Isaiah Capoocia led El Cap with three touchdowns against the Canadian visitors.
