Crusader kickers return to title game after topping King-Chavez 5-1 Phillip Brents | Fri, Mar 01 2013 12:01 PM

Mater Dei Catholic’s boys soccer team hopes to make another run at a San Diego Section championship — and possibly a state regional title as well — after defeating host King-Chavez, 5-1, Wednesday evening in the Division IV semifinals.

The third-seeded Crusaders (12-5-4) advance to meet top-seeded Coronado (21-2-2) in the championship round Saturday, March 2, at Del Norte High School. Kick-off is 4 p.m.

Mater Dei won the 2009 Division IV section and Southern California state regional championship.

“We came as freshmen the next year,” said senior Arturo Golembiewski, who scored two goals in Wednesday’s match. “We’ve lost in semis the last three years. To make the final is very special.”

Jordan Chavez also scored twice and Oscar Silva tallied once in support of winning goalkeeper Ramon Leyva. The Crusaders led 2-0 early and 3-1 at halftime in downing the second-seeded Vaqueros (18-1-2).

“Teamwork and being united in the back made it possible,” said Golembiewski, who is joined on the team by his twin brother Alex.

“We’re very together,” Alex interjected. “We’re playing more as a team right now.”

Mater Dei, which finished third in the Mesa League standings, takes a seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) into the CIF final. The Crusaders defeated visiting La Jolla Country Day, 1-0, in last Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Division III semifinals
The Southwest Raiders, seeded third in this year’s San Diego Section Division III playoffs, out-shot the second-seeded St. Augustine Saints in Wednesday’s semifinal match but neither team could find the net through regulation and overtime, necessitating a shootout tie-breaker. Saints goalkeeper Cody Russell blocked two shots and teammate Kevin Bitar caromed a shot off the bottom of the crossbar for the winning shootout goal to eliminate the Raiders 4-2.
