Castle Park Trojans use punishing running game to go up 2-0 Phillip Brents | Fri, Sep 17 2010 03:22 PM

The Castle Park Trojans, drum roll … are 2-0 after recording yet another lop-sided victory.
The Trojans kicked off the 2010 season with a 28-14 whipping of visiting Kearny and easily handled host Mater Dei Catholic, 36-7, last Friday.

“It’s the kids — they’re 2-0,” said first-year CPHS head coach Hans Graham. “We’re running the ball well and controlling the line of scrimmage. We’ve got over 700 yards (in offense) in two games. The kids are having fun.”

There was no secret to the Trojans’ success against the host Crusaders. Castle Park employed a punishing rushing game to tear open holes in Mater Dei defense. The visitors racked up more than 300 rushing yards and recorded five rushing touchdowns.

Paul Sierra led the visitors with three touchdowns while rushing for 121 yards on just eight carries. Daniel Noriega had 17 carries for 187 yards and scored one touchdown while quarterback John Hernandez scored on a keeper.

The CP defense also has performed well so far. Mater Dei had a chance to close the gap early on the Trojans but was stopped in the shadow of the goalposts. “We had a great goal-line stand,” Graham said.

Castle Park receives its toughest test of the young season when it hosts the undefeated Grossmont Foothillers (2-0) on Friday in a non-league match-up for both teams. Grossmont is coming off a 37-7 shellacking of visiting University City last week.

Desean Waters is leading the Foothillers’ new spread offense. He rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two more in the win over UC and is averaging 224.5 yards in combined offense per game.

Grossmont kicked off the season with a 33-0 victory at Coronado.

“That’s going to be a test for us,” Graham said. “Their quarterback is a great athlete and they have another couple guys who can return punts and run the ball. We’ll see.”
