The A’s edged the Brewers by one game for Chula Vista North Pony’s regular season championship but the Brewers got their revenge by winning the league’s four-team end-of-season championship tournament.
The Brewers defeated the Mets, 9-2, on Sunday to wrap up double-elimination play.
The A’s finished regular season play 20-10 while the Brewers finished 19-11. Following in order were the Mets at 16-14, Yankees at 13-17, Cardinals at 11-19 and Padres at 11-19.
The playoffs built on the parity during the regular season as both the A’s and Brewers met with defeat in their opening games. The third-seeded Mets edged the second-seeded Brewers, 6-5, on June 7 while the four-seeded Yankees topped the top-seeded A’s, 7-4, last Friday.
The Mets shaded the Yankees, 1-0, in the ensuing winners bracket game on Saturday to earn a berth in Sunday’s championship game.
Three teams battled to emerge from the challenger bracket. The Brewers eliminated the A’s, 3-1, Saturday morning and then sent the Yankees home later that afternoon behind a 15-3 victory.
In order to claim this year’s league playoff title, the Brewers needed to defeat the Mets twice on Sunday. The Brewers took the opening game of the championship double-header, 8-5, before scoring a seven-run win in the finale.
Members of the playoff champion Brewers included Guy Jester, Sal Gomez, Abraham Rodriguez, Nic Montoya, Izzack Morales, Gregg Gonzalez, Jonathan Thomas, Jesus Lopez, Kyle Morton, Nathaniel Camacho, Christian Munoz, Zach Courtney, Alberto Aceves and manager Victor Montoya.
