Boys water polo: Hilltop's Howard sets new Metro Conference scoring record Phillip Brents | Fri, Nov 02 2012 01:46 PM

Hilltop High School's boys water polo team honored its seniors on Thursday; scoring ace Nick Howard honored his school and teammates by collecting 15 goals in a 26-7 victory against Bonita Vista to set a new Metro Conference record for most goals scored in one season.

Howard needed seven goals to pass Eastlake's Felix Dion, who tallied 177 regular season goals in 2009. Howard tied Dion with six goals in the first quarter. He scored history-making goal to boost the Lancers to a 7-1 lead early in the second quarter.

With one game remaining on Hilltop's regular season schedule — Friday at Mar Vista — Howard increased his season total to 186 goals.

Dion scored 180 goals in 2009, including three in a playoff loss to Carlsbad.

Howard added six assists and eight steals in Thursday's game. He ranks as the section's No. 1 single-season steals leader with 190.

Senior teammate Carlos Uribe collected six goals, eight assists and four steals in the game. Uribe moved into sole possession of the section's No. 2 spot for single-season assists with 133.

Howard leads the state in goals scored this season and ranks third in assists; Uribe leads the state in assists.

Carlos Lizarraga and Julio Del Real each contributed two goals and one assist in Thursday's game while Anthony Carrillo scored once and Emilio Maldonado had two assists. Josue Macias played the first half with five assists and six goalie saves; Connor Kober had four assists and seven saves in second-half duty.

The Lancers finished league play 6-2 overall and take a 14-8 overall record into Friday's game.

James Cevallos, Adaam Ostrowski, Jan Garay, Robert Rabago and Derek Everett keyed the offense for Bonita Vista, which closed out regular season play 12-18 overall. Cevallos and Garay led the Barons with two goals each.

Eastlake wrapped up a perfect league season with a 19-1 victory against Mater Dei Catholic Thursday at Southwestern College. The Titans, who locked up an automatic bid to next week's Division I playoffs, improved to 19-10 overall.

"I played our seniors for the majority of the game," EHS coach Chris Barrick said. "Noah Schenk and Daylon DeAlva got a lot of minutes."

Scoring went as follows: Josue Alvarez (five goals), Daniel Lord (four goals), Jian Miclat (three goals), Johnny Velasquez (two goals), Jian Laxina (two goals), Noah Schenk (one goals), Kyle DeAlva (one goal), Kyle Schauer (one goal).  Ricky Gonzalez had 12 goalie blocks.


Update: Hilltop's Howard finishes regular season with 199 goals

Senior Nick Howard scored 13 goals in Hilltop’s regular season finale on Friday, a 22-9 non-league victory at Mar Vista to give him 199 goals for the 2012 season, a new school and Metro Conference single-season record. He also had 10 steals to up his San Diego Section record to 201.

Carlos Uribe added nine assists to increase his school and league record to 142, further solidifying his No. 2 position all-time in the section record book.

Howard ranks third all-time in the section for single-season goals.

Uribe finished the season with 68 goals and 84 steals. He scored five goals in the win over Mar Vista and also made four steals.

Carlos Lizarraga had three goals, two assists and four steals in the victory against the Mariners while Maurizio Martinez contributed a goal, assist and four steals.

The Lancers totaled 42 steals in the contest.

Hilltop will be hoping to land a berth as at at-large team in this week’s Division II playoffs. The San Diego Section seeding meeting is Monday.
