Barons' Siwek opens 2014 prep baseball season with no-hitter Phillip Brents | Thu, Mar 20 2014 06:14 PM

Bonita Vista senior right-handed pitcher Danny Siwek opened the 2014 season for the Barons with a no-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts in a 5-0 non-league victory at Calexico on March 8.

Siwek faced 23 batters in the season opener, issuing two walks, to secure the complete game victory.

Siwek has since pitched in two more games – both BVHS losses – allowing seven hits while striking out six batters. In three game appearances this spring, Siwek has pitched 14.2 innings, with seven hits and 18 strikeouts.

The Barons are off to a 3-3 start. Bonita Vista opened the season by splitting a twin-bill in Calexico, and then recorded a 1-0 win over El Capitan in the Hilltop-Lolitas tournament on March 11.

In the latter game, Brandon Torio and Ricky Reynoso combined to allow five hits while striking out 11 Vaqueros. Reynoso drove in the lone run of the game for the Barons, who were limited to four hits. Siwek scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Barons entered Thursday’s tournament game with a 3-3 tourney record following a 2-1 loss to La Costa Canyon on March 13, an 8-5 win over Valhalla on March 15 and a 6-3 setback to Granite Hills on March 18.

Through six games, senior Esteban Velasco leads Bonita Vista with a .412 hitting average, followed by classmate Eduardo Perez at .368, fellow senior Scott Beckstrom and Siwek, both at .333.

Siwek has also done well in the clutch-hitting department with a team-leading four RBI.

High Tech Chula Vista’s baseball team opened the season with a 12-2 win over Lutheran on March 7 as freshman Arky Hernandez went 2-for-3 to record the Bruins’ first hit and first run of the 2014 campaign.  getting our 1st hit and run of the year. Andrew Defante notched a complete game victory with 11 strikeouts.

HTH-CV has since opened up a 4-0 start by collecting subsequent wins against the San Diego Jewish Academy (7-0 on March 11), Foothills Christian (11-10 on March 15) and Army-Navy Academy (26-5 on March 18).

The heavy-hitting Bruins have been led by senior Jake Padilla (.667), freshman Sebastian Negrete (.600), freshman Alex Gravillovich (.600) and Hernandez (.429) while Junior Alexis Guerrero paces the team with eight RBI.

Both Defante and senior Angel Luna are both 2-0 on the mound. Defante (1.62 ERA) has 15 strikeouts in 13 innings while Luna (1.40 ERA) has fanned five batters in 10 innings.
