Barons nip Lancers, improve to 4-0 in Baumgarten/Metro tournament Phillip Brents | Wed, Apr 02 2014 03:46 PM

The Bonita Vista High School baseball team improved to 4-0 in the annual John Baumgarten/Metro Conference tournament after edging visiting Hilltop, 3-2, on Tuesday. The Barons improved to 7-4 overall with the victory.

Danny Siwek earned credit for the win to hike his record to 3-1 on the season. He allowed two hits while striking out five batters in seven innings. For the season, Siwek has compiled a 1.04 earned-run average.

Siwek also helped his cause at the plate by driving in one run in Tuesday’s game. He has a .276 hitting average in 34 plate appearances with five RBI and three runs scored.

Brandon Torio had four hits in four plate appearances in Tuesday’s win and drove in one run. He is hitting .364 with six RBI on the season.

Bonita Vista closes out tournament play on Thursday against visiting Chula Vista. The tournament finals are scheduled Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (JV) and 1 p.m. (varsity) at Eastlake High School.

In other Baumgarten/Metro tournament games on Tuesday:

Montgomery 8, Olympian 4
Werther Araiza went four-for-four and Brandon Lugo picked up the win for the Aztecs, who picked up their first tournament win after losses to Bonita Vista, Otay Ranch and Eastlake. Montgomery, which hosts Mater Dei Catholic on Thursday, improved to 4-5-1 overall. Olympian dropped to 1-3 in tournament play, 5-6 overall.

Southwest 6, High Tech Chula Vista 5
Carlos Acevedo went two-for-three, with a home run and scored two runs for the Raiders, who improved to 3-1 in tournament play (7-6 overall). Acevedo leads Southwest with a .444 hitting average. High Tech-CV dropped to 0-4 in tournament play, 4-7 overall.

Chula Vista 6, San Ysidro 5

Diego Blanco drove in the game-winning run on a double in the bottom of the seventh inning to make a winner out of teammate Steven Mendoza. The Spartans improved to 3-6 on the season, 3-1 in tournament play. San Ysidro, the defending San Diego Section Division III champion, is 2-2 in tournament play, 5-5 overall

Eastlake 7, Sweetwater 4
Luke Ramirez went two-for-four with two RBI and one double to lead the Titans, who improved to 6-3 on the season (3-1 in tournament play). Isaac Vargas received credit for the win, while teammate Dominic Field received credit for the save. The Red Devils dropped to 4-7 on the season, 0-4 in tournament play.

In a non-league game on Tuesday:

Otay Ranch 8, Longmont (Colo.) 0
The host Mustangs, who conclude Baumgarten/Metro tournament play with games Wednesday against visiting Castle Park and Thursday at Hilltop, improved to 9-2 on the season.

In a Baumgarten/Metro tournament game on Wednesday:

Otay Ranch 2, Castle Park 1
Markus Melin earned the win on the mound while teammate Alec Godoy picked up the save as the Mustangs improved to 4-0 in tournament play, 10-2 overall.

Petco Park Preps
Sweetwater will play Olympian at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 4, at Petco Park as part of the San Diego Section’s ongoing relationship with the San Diego Padres. Per rotation, the following conferences will participate in 2014: Southern, North County, Metro, Frontier, Coastal and Southeastern.
