Barons light up scoreboard in 48-12 win over Montgomery Aztecs Phillip Brents | Fri, Sep 06 2013 02:31 PM

The Bonita Vista Barons may have gotten off to a late start to the 2013 high school football season due to coaching uncertainties but appear to have made up for it with what new head coach Chris Thompson referred to as “a season’s worth of special teams plays in one night” as the Barons topped the Montgomery Aztecs, 48-12, in a non-league game played last Friday at Olympian High School.

“It was a good opener for the BVHS kids considering what they have gone through this off-season,” Thompson curtly summed up.

The Barons scored on their opening drive of the game, a 15-play field march capped by a 12-yard run by Chris Boguille.

A 23-yard scoring pass from Marcos Kasak pushed Bonita Vista to a 14-0 edge in the first quarter. A one-yard scoring run by Andy Garcia with 3:58 left in the second quarter made the score 21-0 Barons.

Things then got a bit wild as the teams exchanged kick-off returns for a pair of touchdowns.

First, Chauncey Emerson returned a kick-off 95 yards for a touchdown to trim the BV lead to 21-6. Then it was the Barons turn to blow down the field as Yohan Su went 90 yards for a score on the ensuing kickoff.

27-6 BVHS.

The Barons then recovered a muffed punt on the very next kick-off, placing the ball at the Aztec 17-yard line. That led to a quick score to increase the lead to 35-6.

Bonita Vista recovered another fumble at the Montgomery 25-yard line, with a 15-yard run by Christian Gilstrap moving the ball to the Aztec three-yard line.

From there, the Barons powered into the end zone to lead 42-6 and cap a flurry of four touchdowns scored in a two-minute span.
The game ended with a running clock.

The BVHS defense made a statement as well as the offense.

“We blocked a punt and tackled the punter to set up a score, we blocked two PATs,” Thompson said. “Everybody played.”

How good is this 2013 Baron team? That question will be answered in Friday’s non-league contest at Lincoln, last year’s San Diego Section Division III champions.

Meanwhile, Montgomery will try to get untracked when it hosts El Cajon Valley in another non-league encounter on Friday.
