Barons denied win over No. 5 Warhawks on two-point conversion

Oh so close, but a top 10 section ranking continues to elude the Bonita Vista High School football team. The Barons came up one point shy in their marquee non-league game at fifth-ranked Madison last Friday, dropping a 29-28 decision that could have huge ramifications for the upcoming playoff seeding.

Bonita Vista appeared poised to grab a 28-21 win before the Warhawks (2-1) engineered their final scoring drive and plunged in with the winning points on a two-point conversion.

The loss was the first of the season against two wins for the Barons.

“We are really proud for the effort against Madison,” BVHS head coach Chris Thompson underscored. “We went toe to toe with the No. 5 team in the county. Football is a crazy game and Madison got the ball to bounce their way on one very important play. They may have won the game but they did not beat us. We have a clear goal for this season and we are on to Scripps Ranch.”

Bonita Vista travels to Scripps Ranch to take on red-hot Falcons team coming off a 48-6 win over Serra last Friday. Kick off is Friday, Sept. 18, at 6:30 p.m.

Greg Bell scored two second-half touchdowns and teammate Chris Boguille added another to power what appeared to be a game-winning rally for the visitors, who trailed by five points at halftime.

But the Barons’ dreams of a statement victory were dashed when Erick Buchanan scored on a four-yard run with 1:24 to play. Madison coach Rick Jackson then gambled on the two-point conversion for the win, and Buchanan got the ball again – and scored the winning points for his team.

Bonita Vista trailed 13-8 at halftime. Atoa Fox scored on a 26-yard punt return and Warhawk punter Diego Ledezma was tackled in the end zone for a safety.

Terrell Carter completed three touchdown passes in the game for the victors. Two pass plays figured prominently in the game – a 31-yard touchdown pass to Marc Quinlin and a 55-yard scoring pass to Brandon Lewis.

Bell rushed 27 times for 165 yards while Boguille tacked on 37 yards on four carries. Bells ripped off one 28-yard run while Boguille added a 23-yard scamper from the line of scrimmage.

As a team, the Barons amassed 185 rushing yards.

BV quarterback Anthony Posada completed seven of 17 passing attempts for 70 yards with two interceptions.

Ethan Williams caught two passes for 30 yards to lead Baron receivers.

Aaron Diehl had seven unassisted tackles and one sack. Gabe Melhorn led the visitors with two sacks while Fox also had one sack.

Madison racked up six sacks against Posada, who lost 23 yards on eight carries. Jordan Cole had three of the sacks for the winners while Robert Wright had both picks.

Carter completed five of 11 passing attempts for 115 yards while breaking one running play for 38 yards. Lewis had three catches for 76 yards.

On the season, Bell has rushed for 460 yards and scored six rushing touchdowns while Boguille has rushed for 164 yards and scored three rushing TDs.

Posada has passed for 328 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in three games. He has one rushing touchdown to his credit.

The Bonita Vista defense has collected seven sacks on the season to go with three fumble recoveries.

The close game against the Barons dropped Madison down to the No. 6 section ranking. Bonita Vista remains out of the top 10.

Madison travels to Eastlake on Friday for a key 7 p.m. non-league clash. The Titans dropped out of the section’s top 10 rankings following last Friday’s 56-7 setback to then No. 3 Helix.

Eastlake, ranked eighth in the county, scored first in the match-up of section top 10 teams but the host Highlanders had an answer: 56 unanswered points.

Izzack Morales passed 40 yards to Josh Olave to ignite the visiting Titans, who were coming off their first win of the season the previous Friday, a 34-28 win at El Toro.

Helix had started its season sluggishly with a loss to Arizona’s Scottsdale Chaparral and entered the game 0-1.

The Highlanders were slow to get into their rhythm against Eastlake but once they did, the Scotties took off. Helix led 28-7 at halftime and tacked on 21 more points in the third quarter to lead 49-7.

The Highlanders amassed 406 yards in total offense. Nathan Stinson rushed 11 times for 168 yards while Michael Austin passed for an additional 129 yards.

Stinson scored on breakaway runs of 66 and 42 yards to boost the hosts.

Helix, which moved up to the county’s No. 2-ranked team, has another section top 10 match-up scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, when the Scotties host eighth-ranked Cathedral Catholic (1-2). Game time is 7 p.m.

For Eastlake, Morales completed six of 10 passing attempts for 95 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The running game, a Titan strongpoint, generated 111 yards on 42 carries. Nick Klugh had seven carries for 32 yards to lead Eastlake in the rushing department.

Chris Olave had two catches for 38 yards; Morales led the Titans with 89 total yards.

Greg Raby and Nate Sweat each had five tackles while Manny Velarde had one fumble recovery.

Micah Pietila-Wiggs had one kickoff return for 24 yards. Dean Smith had four punts for a 27.5-yard average.
