The Bonita Vista Barons and Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders both found themselves one victory away from advancing to Saturday’s slate of divisional championship games at UC San Diego after each scored a pair of victories to open double-elimination play in this year’s San Diego Section playoffs.

Bonita Vista, the top-seeded team in the Division II bracket, advanced to Thursday’s semifinals after defeating ninth-seeded Point Loma (10-0 on May 18) and fourth-seeded San Marcos (3-1 on May 19).

Mater Dei Catholic, seeded second among Division IV teams, defeated 10th-seeded Holtville (4-1 on May 18) and third-seeded Imperial (13-3 on May 19) to advance.

Bonita Vista carried a 23-3-1 record into its semifinal game against second-seeded Rancho Bernardo (21-8-1) while Mater Dei Catholic entered its semifinal match-up against top-seeded Madison (26-5) with a 20-8 record.

The winners of Thursday’s semifinals will face Thursday’s challenger bracket winners in Saturday’s finals.

The Division IV title game is scheduled at 11:30 a.m., while the Division II final is scheduled at 4:30 p.m.

Bonita Vista rapped out 17 hits in clobbering Point Loma in its playoff opener. Carolyn Wright smashed a home run and drove in three runs while Chelsy Ramirez and Ashley Quidolit each drove in a pair of runs. Celinna Cosio also homered while Hanna Flippen tripled in the game.

Jennifer Hartman and Alex Vargas shared the shutout in the pitcher’s circle, combining to scatter five hits.

Flippen, Anissa Pinedo and Vargas each scored runs in the win over San Marcos, with Pinedo and Tianah Hathaway both credited with one RBI.

Hartman picked up the win on the strength of a complete game six-hitter to improve to 17-1 on the season.
Alexis Morales pitched a complete game five-hitter to lead Mater Dei past Holtville while Maritza Lopez-Portillo picked up the victory against Imperial.

Avery Finch, Kimberly Tamayo and Taylor Cruse each drove in two runs while Skania Lemus had three hits, including a triple, and scored three runs versus Imperial.

Otay Ranch (22-11) advanced to Tuesday’s third round before being eliminated in a 3-2 loss to second-seeded Mira Mesa (26-6-1).

The Mustangs eliminated eighth-seeded Grossmont, 6-3, in a second round contest on May 19 as freshman catcher Erika Rodriguez went three-for-four with a two-run homer and a triple.

The Foothillers won last year’s Division I title.
