Baron spikers finish second to #1 LCC Paul Martinez | Fri, Nov 25 2011 04:06 PM

Bonita Vista High School has been rebuilding its girls volleyball program for the last 11 years, this year making it back to the San Diego Section finals for the first time since its celebrated 2000 state title.

Unfortunately, they were up against top-seeded La Costa Canyon, which has been in every CIF final for the last 10 years, collecting eight titles on the way (seven at the Division I level before moving to Division II this season).

The second-seeded Barons went down 25-14, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16 Saturday in the San Diego Section Division II final.

After dropping the first game without ever holding a lead, Bonita Vista took the second game by using flawless digging and some trick plays at the net to force a string of Maverick errors.

However, the Barons were unable to capitalize on that momentum, and dropped the final two games.

Jenelle Hudson (15) and Meagan Wright (11) led BVHS in kills while Wright had a team-high five blocks, Heather Gearhart contributed a game-high 21 digs and Taimane Napoleon had a game-high 25 assists.

Despite the disappointing finish, the 29-6 Barons still qualified for the California state tournament, and began play Tuesday at St. Lucy's (Glendora).

The reigning Mesa League champions’ season ended there, however, as St. Lucy's (28-6) recorded a 3-1 victory, winning 26-24, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17.

For those teams remaining in the state playoffs, the state final is Dec. 3 at Concordia University.
