Area Little Leaguers shoot for the stars in Pitch, Hit and Run event Phillip Brents | Fri, May 03 2013 04:12 PM

Sixty-three youths took the first step toward reaching for the stars — Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, that is — after competing in Sunday’s MLB-sponsored Pitch, Hit and Run competition at Chula Vista American Little League.

The free event took place on the league’s ball fields located at Hilltop Middle School. Former San Diego Padres all-star pitcher Randy Jones made a guest appearance.

The entry list kept volunteers busy from registration at 9 a.m. to the end of competition around noon.

Pitch, Hit and Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. The grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills.

Entrants tested their aim at hitting a pitching target, running bases and hitting from a tee.

Boys and girls are divided into four age divisions for the competition: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14. They will get the opportunity to advance through four levels of competition, including team championships at Major League ballparks and the national finals at the 2013 MLB All-Star Game, which will be hosted July 16 by the New York Mets.

The individual pitching, hitting and running champions, along with the all-around champion in each age and gender group as awarded on Sunday, will now advance to the section level of the competition, which will be hosted by another area Little League in mid-May to early June.

The San Diego regional competition will take place sometime in June at Petco Park.

Regional winners from each of the other MLB team sites will assemble in New York City.

Sunday’s event also doubled as a fundraiser to construct a T-ball field.
