2012 prep football preview: Will defense rest for Otay Ranch? Phillip Brents | Thu, Aug 30 2012 03:15 PM

Last year was last year, according to Otay Ranch head coach Anthony Lacsina, who feels better days are ahead for his Mustangs.

“We finished 5-5 last year and took our lumps being young,” the ORHS coach said. “This year I think is the most balanced the league has been since I’ve been here and I feel we’ll be right up there with everyone.”

Lacsina admitted the Mustangs remain a junior-dominated team in 2012. “I think we stack up skill-wise with all the other teams in our league,” he said. “I think it will be the play of our offensive line that will be the key for us.”

Otay Ranch is led offensively by receiver Chris Martin (30 catches for 609 yards, nine touchdowns), running back Anthony Williams (582 rushing yards, six TDs), fullback Deondric Cunningham (four TDs) and quarterback Kyle Hawkins.

Hawkins carries a 19-1 record from the freshman and junior varsity level to the varsity ranks. “We’re hoping that translates well to the varsity level,” Lacsina said.

The Mustangs should be strong defensively, led by all-league defensive back Jordan Peterson (three picks, 66 tackles), middle linebacker Justin Doton, cornerback Steven Alexander (two fumble recoveries) and outside linebackers Francisco Solis and Jeremy Gula.
