The San Ysidro Cougars finished 4-6 (including one forfeit victory) during Tyler Arciaga’s first season as head coach. Arciaga is back but most of last year’s team isn’t after being lost to graduation.
San Ysidro has only three returners in 2012.
“We are young, but this is a good group of kids who have been working hard throughout the off-season,” Arciaga said. “We have a couple of new student-athletes who can help us out, so we are looking forward to a wide-open season.”
Quarterback David Diaz earned all-league honorable mention honors as a junior in 2011 after completing 40 of 82 passes for 428 yards and five touchdowns.
Senior receiver Junior Soto and senior lineman Oscar Castillo join Diaz as the team’s top returners.
It will be left for the team’s newcomers to make their mark.
Senior receiver John Crowder is a transfer from Youngker, Ariz. He has the height at 6-4 to snatch balls over the heads of defenders.
Also looking to make an impact are sophomore receiver Gilbert Suarez, senior defensive back Tre Harris, junior center Miguel Brocomontes and senior running back/defensive back Mike Thomas.
