Montgomery coach Ted Jarumayan said the 2012 edition of the Aztecs is a 50-50 mix of new players and returners.
The 2011 Monty team finished 5-6 following a 19-7 loss to Metro-South Bay League champion Mar Vista in the opening round of the San Diego Section Division III playoffs.
The Aztecs finished 1-2 in Metro-Pacific League play in a three-way tie with Castle Park and Sweetwater for second place.
There are indications Montgomery should be improved this season, perhaps enough to make a run at the league championship title.
The Aztecs return seven offensive starters and six defensive starters.
Jarumayan lists his team’s strengths as experience on offense, athleticism on defense and young talent. On the down side, the MOH coach lists lack of depth and physical size as team weaknesses.
Given that all the other teams in the league face similar circumstances, it should be an exciting, highly competitive season, with no real favorite yet to emerge.
The Aztecs are gifted offensively with the return of their starting quarterback (senior Harley Armada), starting running back (senior Charles Williams) and starting receiver (senior Aust’n Morga).
Armada passed for 819 yards and six touchdowns last season while Williams punished opposing defenses by rushing for 1,406 yards and scoring 14 TDs.
Morga ranked third on the team with four touchdowns.
Two-way standout Marcos Mathis had two picks on defense (at strong safety) and blocked one punt. He scored one touchdown while rushing 47 times for 315 yards from the tailback position.
“We’re looking to win the Pacific League,” Jarumayan said.
