2012 prep football preview: Eagles will have foes seeing double Phillip Brents | Thu, Aug 30 2012 03:19 PM

If Olympian quarterback Christopher Humphrey and wide receiver Christein Humphrey have opponents seeing double in 2012, there’s a good reason for that — they’re twins.

Christopher is one minute older than Christein. But the number both might prefer to talk about centers on whether the Eagles can continue to add to their current streak of three consecutive league championship titles.

Christopher Humphrey passed for 732 yards and 10 touchdowns last year in helping lead Olympian to a final 9-4 record and a runner-up finish in the Division III San Diego Section championship game at Qualcomm Stadium.

Along the way, the Eagles raised some eyebrows by winning the 2011 Metro-Mesa League championship, upending resident heavyweights Eastlake and Otay Ranch, in the process.

Both Humphrey twins expect to be key factors this season as Olympian prepares to defend its league title.

Both admit last year’s loss to Cathedral Catholic in the division final taught them some valuable lessons.

“It took a while for me to get over it,” Christopher said. “We had pre-game jitters. We were too excited to perform like we needed to.”

Braced by top receiver Sergio Bailey (30 catches for 549 yards, nine touchdowns), cornerbacks Andrell Snowden (four interceptions) and Isaiah Gibson (78 tackles, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries) and linebacker/lineman Zac Norton (72 tackles, two sacks) Eagles head coach Gil Warren expects his team to once again contend for the league championship.

“Our offensive line is probably the biggest we’ve ever had — that’s a plus for us,” Warren said.

Among the returning linemen are Gilbert Yorba, Ray Tabbs, Justin Fagan and Norris Shull.

Warren believes he could have another winning hand. “I think we surprised some teams last year; they’ll be watching out for us this year,” he said.
