Southwestern College men’s hoops to open new campus gymnasium

For those passing the corner of Otay Lakes Road and East H Street in the eastern reaches of Chula Vista over the past two years, they have seen Southwestern College’s new gymnasium and aquatics complex rising from the ground up.

While some construction is ongoing, the new gym will see its first on-court action when Southwestern College takes on Palomar College in a men’s basketball game on Tuesday, Dec. 19. Tip off is 6 p.m.

SWC coach John Cosentino will host a youth basketball camp in the new facility Dec. 18-20. The camp runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to girls and boys ages 8-15. Cost is $80. Register at www.southwesternjaguars.com/camps.

Tip-off
The Jaguars are off to a 3-10 start to the 2017-18 season. The Dec. 19 game is officially classified as a non-conference matchup. Southwestern competes in the Pacific Coast South while Palomar competes in the Pacific Coast North.

Palomar edged visiting Southwestern, 73-70, in overtime on Thursday, Dec. 14.

The Jaguars tipped off the season with three games in the San Diego Miramar tournament Nov. 2-4. Southwestern dropped the opener, 73-66, to Cerritos, then came back to score victories in its next two games — defeating Rio Hondo, 86-82, in overtime and Imperial Valley 78-66.

Southwestern dropped its home opener, 89-65, to Saddleback on Nov. 8.

The Jaguars then participated in the Palomar College tournament Nov. 24-25 and the Citrus Invitational Dec. 1-3, going 1-4 between the two events.

Quincey Ferebee led SWC in Thursday’s game with 19 points while Jose Serrano scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Emiliano Arrellano added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Matt Meyers and Jackson Strong led the Comets with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Palomar out-rebounded Southwestern 38-37.

The teams were tied 58-58 at halftime.

Serrano leads SWC in season scoring with a 12.8 points-per-game average while Ferebee has an 11.3 scoring average.

Following next Tuesday’s home game, the Jaguars next return to the new campus gym for a three-game home stand against Mt. San Jacinto College (Jan. 2), West Los Angeles (Jan. 9) and Imperial Valley (Jan. 12).

Besides Southwestern, other Pacific Coast South members include Imperial Valley, Cuyamaca, San Diego City, San Diego Mesa and Grossmont.

The aquatics complex is scheduled to open in spring 2018.
