Ready for a high-energy and rocking romp? OnStage Playhouse presents “Smokey Joe’s Café,” with songs from the 50s and 60s.

As Broadway’s longest running musical revue, the show provides entertainment for all ages with a special bonus for those who remember the songs of that era. The more than 30 songs were written by the incredible duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and were performed by artists such as Elvis, The Coasters, The Drifters, Peggy Lee and Little Richard.

The ensemble sings classics like “On Broadway,” “Yakety Yak,” “Kansas City,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Potion #9,” “Spanish Harlem” and “Stand by Me.”

The singing is outstanding, but the narrative and choreography with its mix of humor and pathos assist in keeping the audience mesmerized by the show. All of the singers/dancers have both group and individual moments.

The cast includes Dominique Dates (passionate and vibrant), Reggie Hutchins (a smooth dancer), Kyle Leatherbury (ranging from comic to soul-searching), Belinda Pickens (powerful and soulful), Alexander Salazar-Dunbar (with the “Charlie Brown” deep voice), Raymond Stradford III (cool and mellow), Jake Strohl (performs with warmth), and Emma Rose Tarr (saucy and radiant).

Shirley Johnston deserves added notice; besides being a sophisticated and sultry performer, she is the director and choreographer. Her talent is shown through the show’s quick pacing, seamless transitions, and creative and clever dancing that is integrated with the songs.

The onstage band is perfect in its accompaniment. Michelle Gray (musical director), Teri Brown (producer) and Chad Oakley and Brown (set designers) are all part of creating this pleasurable production.

“I highly recommend it. It is upbeat, fun, and colorful,” audience member Louise Pia praised the show.

Another audience member added that one could lose calories just watching the energetic show.

The musical revue runs through June 9. Pay-in-advance online tickets are $25, with group rates available.  Curtain times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

OnStage Playhouse is located at 291 Third Ave., in downtown Chula Vista, within walking distance of several breweries and restaurants for pre- and post-show dining.

Parking is easily available on nearby streets or in several City lots.
