If there was a time we should take video games seriously, it should be now.
On July 8, Video Game Day will remind us how much video games have changed since their inception. It’ll make us realize they are now the focal point of living room entertainment in ways that 20 years ago, we couldn’t have imagined.
Video Game Day will illustrate the evolution that video games have undergone in the last 40 years. From the Nintendo Entertainment System to the Playstation 4 coming out this holiday season, video games have transformed to become a multibillion-dollar industry that’s just tapping the surface on what it’s capable of.
Today’s generation would find it hard to believe video games would be a flop in the economy but there were times when the video game industry seemed obsolete and hopeless. It is simply referred to as the Video Game Crash of 1977 and, in another instance, the North American Video Game Crash of 1983. A simple, straightforward title for a problem caused by a simple dilemma, too many video game systems. In both instances too many manufacturers wanted a part in the video game business by creating their own console, which led to most companies going bankrupt.
In the case of 1977, it wasn’t rare to see lots of black market duplicates of the then famous system Pong.
So recharge the battery packs and clear the couches. Video Game Day is coming. Gather with friends and family and let the fun and trash talking ensue.
