Twelve South County football players are on the roster of the South team for Friday’s Alex Spanos All-Star Classic at Mesa College. Kick-off is 7 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m.
The Alex Spanos All-Star Classic honors graduated seniors with one final game appearance in front of family and friends before they head off to their respective college programs. Proceeds from the game benefit the High School Sports Association of San Diego.
South County players (with their college commitments) include Mater Dei Catholic quarterback Joe Legerrette-Luke (Colorado State University), Olympian wide receiver Sergio Bailey (undecided), Olympian running back Andrell Snowden (not available), Chula Vista receiver Ray Holden (Brown University), Eastlake linebacker Blake Wilson (Southwestern College), Olympian offensive lineman Rey Tabbs (Southwestern College), Eastlake offensive lineman Austin Ortiz (San Diego State University), Chula Vista offensive linemen David Zavala (Southwestern College) and Ray Samuels (Southwestern College), Hilltop offensive lineman Andrew Baynes (not available), Castle Park receiver/defensive back Aaron Leon (not available) and Chula Vista receiver Richard Walker (Southwestern College).
The South team is coached by Madison’s Rick Jackson; the North team is coached by El Camino’s Pulu Poumele.
South team captains include Valhalla quarterback Ramsey Romano and Madison linebacker Keoni Kanoa. North team captains include Orange Glen quarterback Austin Early and El Camino defensive end Jamal Newman.
Honorary captains for the game include Chargers defensive end Cam Thomas and wide receiver Keenan Allen. The game will also feature the first official appearance of the 2013 Chargers Girls squad.
The long list of Spanos Classic alums who have gone on to play in the National Football League includes former Chargers linebacker Donnie Edwards (Chula Vista), former Buccaneers and Broncos safety John Lynch (Torrey Pines) and former Cowboys and Rams defensive tackle La’ Roi Glover (Point Loma).
Tickets for the game are available at the gate and are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
