The Metro Conference’s set-up of two-game baseball series continues to conjure the unpredictable. Case in point: The Eastlake Titans bombarded Mater Dei Catholic, 8-0, on May 1; the Crusaders returned the favor two days later by recording an 8-5 upset victory.
The loss to Mater Dei dropped Eastlake into a tie with the Bonita Vista Barons for the Mesa League lead.
As fate would have it, the Titans and Barons squared off Tuesday in the first of two contests. Eastlake eked out a key 1-0 victory to move back on top of the league standings.
Dylan McDonald spun a complete game four-hitter while Spencer Sundahl went two-for-three and scored the game’s lone run.
Danny Siwek, who scattered six hits, took the loss.
The Titans, who improved to 16-7-2 overall, 6-1 in league play, close out regular season play with a two-game series against the Olympian Eagles (7-17, 2-5) while the Barons (16-9, 5-2) test the Hilltop Lancers (11-13, 2-5).
Meanwhile, the Montgomery Aztecs moved closer to clinching this year’s South Bay League title after scoring a crucial 3-2 victory against visiting Mar Vista on Tuesday.
Joel Castro tossed a complete game two-hitter while Mario Perez drove in two runs for the Aztecs (15-7-1 overall, 8-1 in league play).
Chula Vista (18-10, 8-3) remained two games back in the loss column after topping Southwest, 7-3, to run its winning streak to four games.
