Several local high school baseball teams are off to promising starts as tournament play dominates the early portion of the 2012 season.

The Eastlake Titans have opened the annual Aztec-Foothiller tourney with a 4-1 start while the Montgomery Aztecs were not far behind in the same field at 2-2-1.

The Otay Ranch Mustangs opened the Bully’s East tournament 3-1.

Defending Mesa League champion Bonita Vista dropped to 3-3 following a tough 2-1 loss to longtime East County power Granite Hills in a Hilltop tournament game on Tuesday.

Danny Siwek tossed a two-hit gem in the setback, facing just three batters over the minimum. Austin Wilkes entered the game hitting .500 to lead the Barons.

BV senior Troy Cruz, who has signed to play at UCSD, fanned 10 batters in an 8-1 win at Calexico on March 3 to jump-start the season.

The Chula Vista Spartans are buoyed by the return of senior Anthony York this season.

York, an all-league selection as a sophomore, helped spark the Spartans to their first victory of the season, a 6-1 decision over the visiting Francis Parker Lancers, on March 8. York (6-3, 165) started the game on the mound and also drove in his team’s first run of the game.

Chula Vista had started the season 0-4 as part of the Bill Whittaker Classic tournament.

Montgomery defeated Serra and Monte Vista and played to a 1-1 draw against Coronado before dropping its first game, 5-3, at Eastlake last Saturday.

Early season leaders for the Aztecs include Dionasys Kalentermidis (.417), Jesus Estrada (.389), Mario Perez (.357), Alexis Leyva (.333) and Saul Colmenares (.333). Everado Tovar had yet to allow an earned run in 12 innings.
