The Bonita Vista High School girls soccer team appeared to be on course for something special this season, and the season certainly isn’t over by any means.
The Barons entered last Friday’s Mesa League match against the visiting Eastlake Titans sporting a 3-0 league mark and sterling 14-2-2 overall record.
After it was over, it was the Titans who walked off the field in first place, however, following their 2-0 victory.
An upset? Eastlake would not like to think so after improving to 9-3-1 overall with the key win.
Something special could be on double order this season for the longtime Mesa League rivals.
The Titans, who improved to 4-0 in league play, scored both their goals in the second half to snap a scoreless halftime tie. Gabriela Sainz and Blyss McCann received credit for the goals while goalkeeper JoJo McCaskill was credited with four saves in recording the shutout victory.
Both teams competed in the 104-team Barons Girls Soccer Tournament in early December. Bonita Vista finished runner-up to Torrey Pines in the Premier Division championship game while Eastlake finished pool play 1-1-1.
Brenna Bailey leads the Titans in season scoring with 11 goals and two assists, followed by Gillian Stargensky with three goals and four assists and Rebecca Torres with four goals and one assist.
Bonita Vista entered last Friday’s game riding the momentum of a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2). The Barons flattened visiting Olympian, 7-1, on Jan. 25 behind three goals from Kassie Castillo and single markers each from Aleena Cruz, Jennifer Ballez, Hayleigh Shields and Devon Roncoroni.
In Wednesday’s slate of league contests, Otay Ranch defeated Mater Dei Catholic, 6-0, behind three goals by Tiana Wood and a pair by Mikelle Garcia.
