With 15 plasma television monitors strategically positioned throughout the building, customers at the Brew House at EastLake are guaranteed not to miss a play by their favorite team. The sports-themed establishment, which opened in December 2007, is more than just an American-style pub. With five fermenting vats on the premises, the Brew House doubles as a brewery and restaurant.
The concept, according to co-owners Jim Shirey and Doug Chase, was to create a locally-owned independent venue where people could enjoy a meal, catch a sporting event or meet with family and friends. We believe they have succeeded.
The Brew House, located in the EastLake Design District at 871 Showroom Place, offers an extensive menu, seven house beers brewed in Chula Vista, seasonal beers, guest beers, a selection of wines and a full bar. The establishment has already built up a loyal clientele.
“We opened at the wrong time with the economy but we’re holding our own out there and looking forward to better times,” Shirey said.
There are more than 100 items on the main menu, ranging from sandwiches and burgers to authentic Buffalo-style chicken wings, from soups and salads to pizza and pasta, from barbecue ribs to pollo asado and pulled pork street tacos.
The burgers (half-pound Angus beef) are made with a 15-percent fat content for optimum flavor.
All the platters include “really big portions,” according to the owners. Don’t be surprised to have to take some home.
Popular appetizers include the wings and calamari.
All-you-can-eat specials highlight the menu on Monday (fish and chips $15.95), Tuesday (ribs $21.95), Wednesday (chicken wings $12.95) and Thursday (pasta $13.95). Children 10 and younger eat free on Monday and Tuesday.
The Brew House’s new economic stimulus lunch menu is available 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and features items that are either $6.95 or $7.95. The Philly cheese steak sandwich is made to authentic specifications with grilled chopped steak, onions, bell peppers and melted cheese throughout on a toasted hoagie roll.
“One of the things we pride ourselves on is that all of our food here is made fresh,” Shirey said. “All our desserts are made in-house except ice cream.”
Two private rooms are available (the “dugout” downstairs and the “skybox” upstairs) for private parties or meetings. Total seating capacity in the restaurant is 275.
The Brew House remains EastLake’s premier micro-brewery.
One of the more unique things we’ve run across is the Brew House’s five taster flights. For $10, customers can select five beers from the nine in the regular lineup and receive five-ounce samples of each.
Among the house brews in the regular lineup are the Bonita blonde (a golden ale bittered with noble German hops), Wolf Canyon wheat (American-style wheat beer with a subtle addition of hops for a dry, crisp finish), America’s finest amber (a full-flavored amber ale with a caramel character), Palomar pale ale (medium-bodied ale), Rolling Hills Irish red (a modern interpretation of ale brewed by monks in the 14th century), Star of India IPA (ale made to survive the long ocean voyage from England to India) and the Otay Lakes oatmeal stout (the darkest house ale with chocolate and roasted malt flavors).
The two biggest individual sellers are the Wolf Canyon wheat and Bonita blonde beers. The wheat brew is very smooth-tasting while the oatmeal stout goes well with dessert.
The pumpkin ale, one of the seasonal beers in rotation, is made from 200 pounds of real roasted pumpkin with nutmeg and clove. The liberty lager, another seasonal brew, is light in both calories and flavor for those who prefer something smooth and easy-drinking.
Bottled beer also is available as are premium tequilas, specialty cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. The wine list includes more than 20 wines, including those from California’s wine-growing regions, Italy and New Zealand.
There are daily double happy hours: 3-6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close.
The Brew House offers live music Thursday and Friday nights and a live DJ and dancing Saturday night.
During the football season, the Brew House at EastLake hosts a Monday Night Football viewing with sportscaster C.S. Keys that includes visits from Chargers players, raffle prizes and drink specials.
