Bonita Vista tips Eastlake for Mesa League top spot
Supremacy on the court in the Mesa League was at stake Wednesday at Eastlake High School as the host Titans battled arch rival Bonita Vista. The teams’ first match-up on Oct. 2 produced a five-game thriller the host Barons managed to pull off after trailing 2-0.

The rematch went to the Barons three games to one 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 26-24. Each game was as close as the score indicated. “They came to play,” BVHS coach Woodie Taeatafa said in regard to the Titans.

“This was great for the South Bay. They’re a great team, very athletic. We seemed to have turned the corner the last two weeks. It’s been a huge transition with so many players who played part-time last year being asked to step up to full-time roles.”

Bonita Vista, which received 19 kills from Allie Loitz, three blocks from Kelsey Ferko, 31 assists from Taimane Napoleon and 24 digs from Megan Riley, leads the Mesa League standings at 7-0 (15-11 overall). Eastlake, which finished 3-3 at the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions Oct. 19-20 in Phoenix, follows at 4-2 (20-9 overall).

The San Diego Section playoffs are scheduled to start Nov. 6 (Division II, Division IV and Division V) and Nov. 7 (Division I and Division III).
